Moodubelle: Students’ Council inaugurated in St. Lawrence Degree College

Moodubelle, 04 Jul 2013: The Students’ Council of St. Lawrence Degree College for the academic year 2013-14 was inaugurated  by the Correspondent , Rev. Fr. Joswey Fernandes by lighting the lamp along with Dean-Commodore Jerome Castelino, former principal Dr. Eugene D’Souza, present principa, Mrs. Sarita D’Souza, Student Welfare Officer, Mrs. Veena Palan  and two student representatives.

 

The members of the Students Council were administered the oath of office by Principal Mrs. Sarita D’Souza. The members of the Students Council included:  Sarita Lavina D’Souza(Second Year B.Com)-President, Divya (Second Year BA)-Secretary, Ashwini Fernandes (First Year B.Com)-Joint Secretary, Alwyn (Second Year B.Com)-Sports Secretary (Boys), Anitha Acharthi(Second Year B.Com)-Sports Secretary(Girls), Ravi Kumar (Second Year B.Com) and Rakshitha (Second Year BA)-NSS Secretaries, ) Class Representatives- Vipin Machado and Merlin Mendonca (Second Year B.Com), Sachin and Sheethal(First Year B.Com), Navaz and Deeksha Kulal (Second Year BA), Nandana Shetty and Jesvita (First Year BA).

 

Prior to the inauguration and oath taking ceremony of the Students Council, following the prayer hymn sung by the students, Principal Mrs. Sarita D’Souzas welcomed the guests on the dais and the invitees.  In his introductory address the Dean of the College, Commodore Jerome Castelino  gave a brief account of the growth of the college during the past one year. He appreciated the efforts of the students and members of the teaching staff in getting good results in the Second Semester Examinations held during the month of April/May 2013.

 

The outgoing Principal Dr. Eugene D’Souza formally handed over the charge to the present Principal Mrs. Sarita D’Souza in front of the Correspndent.

 

 

In his farewell message, Dr. Eugene D’Souza congratulated the members of the Students Council and urged them to carry on their responsibilities in the interest of the student community and to uphold the dignity  of the college. He also congratulated Principal Mrs. Sarita D’Souza  and said that under her  youthful and dynamic leadership the college would  make progress  in the years to come and St. Lawrence College would develop into a model college.  Recalling his tenure as the Principal of the college during the past one year, Dr. Eugene D’Souza  thanked the Correspondent, Rev. Fr. Joswey Fernandes,  Commodore Jerome Castelino, Mrs. Sarita D’Souza and the staff members and the student community for the support and cooperation that they had extended to him while carrying on his responsibilities as the Principal. He also thanked  well-wishers and donors especially Mr. Valerian Alva-Chairman of Moodubelle Charitable Trust for having sponsored the Computer Lab, Sound System and Generator.

 

As a token of appreciation of Dr. Eugene D’Souza’s service to the college as the Principal during the last year, the Correspondent, Rev. Fr. Joswey Fernandes presented him a memento and flowers.

 

In his presidential address, Rev. Fr. Joswey Fernandes  wished well to the Students Council members and congratulated all the students of the Second Year BA and B.Com for good results . He also expressed appreciation of the service rendered by Dr. Eugene D’Souza as the Principal during the last academic year and expressed hope and confidence that under the new Principal, Mrs. Sarita D’Souza the college would make  progress.

 

Mrs. Veena Palan, Students Welfare Officer proposed the vote of thanks and Mrs. Sarita Ashwin compeered the programme.

 

Besides the dignitaries on the dias, the inauguration of the Students Council programme was attended by Alphonse K. Alva-Vice President of the Parish Pastoral Council, Mrs. Jacinta D’Souza-Secretary, Mr. Sylvester Mathias-Headmaster of Church Aided Higher Primary School, Mrs. Helen D’Souza-Manager of the Moodubelle Charitable Trust and Teresa D’Almeida-College Counselor.

Born on 21 July  1975 at Neerude, Mrs. Sarita D’Souza  had primary and high school education at Mukthi Prakash School, Neerude and continued her PU and degree college education at the Pompeii College, Aikala where sshe completed B.A. course in 1996. Mrs. Sarita continued her Post Graduate studies  from Mysore University and acquired M.A. degree in Sociology and later in Political Science.

 

Mrs. Sarita D’Souza served as part-time lecturer in St. Mary’s College, Shirva from 1999 to 2000 and from 2000 in St. Cecily’s PU Coillege in Udupi. From 2006 to 2008, she served as a lecturer in St. John’s PU College, Shankarpura and from 2008 to 2012 as a full-time lecturer in St. Mary’s College, Shirva. When St. Lawrence Degree College was started in Moodubelle in June 2012, the services of Mrs. Sarita D’Souza were transferred from St. Mary’s College, Shirva to St. Lawrence College, Moodubelle in the capacity of Vice-Principal.

 

As Dr. Eugene D’Souza, the first principal of St. Lawrence College had to retire due to the UGC Rule that a person beyond the age of 65 cannot continue as the Principal of any college, Mrs. Sarita D’Souza was appointed as the Principal of St. Lawrence College, Moodubelle with effect from 1 June 2013.

 

Besides being a popular and effective lecturer, Mrs. Sarita D’Souza  is an efficient organizer and  renowned ‘Master of Ceremonies’.

 

Mrs. Sarita D’Souza is married to Prof. Vincent Alva of Padubelle who is Assistant Professor in the Department of English in the Milagres College, Kallianpur. They have two daughters-Nikhita and Nireeksha who are both studying in St. Cecily’s School, Udupi.
