Udupi, 21 Mar 2013: A mono rail will run between Kinnimulky that lies on north of Udupi town to Manipal, a distance of 6 kilometers within 5 years from now….!

It is the punch line in the election manifesto of Congress that has bagged majority after 30 years in the recent civic polls offered assurances ahead of assuming the charge.

A mono rail runs on train-track laid on single pillars above the ground.  Whether, it’s possible for a civic body in order to execute such an expensive project?  Whether, it’s essential for Udupi town?
How to set arrange huge amounts?  Whether it’s a political gimmick?  One has to wait for 5 years to get the answers.

The manifesto has one more key issue that is to extend the proposed LNG pipeline: Chitradurga – Mangalore to Udupi by laying additional 350 kilometers, in order to supply cooking gas to every household in town.  Besides to supply LNG to filling stations and at reduced rates to fisheries boats.

The manifesto has general issues, such as around-the-clock water supply, proper roads, better drainage, revision of taxes, garbage disposal, helpline, cleanliness and hygiene etc.

It has the significant issue of forming ward Committees in different localities with members of veterans, experienced and enterprising locals, to oversee the developments in their respective wards and to find solution to different issues. Such Committees that exit in Kerala managed to curb corruption to a greater extent.  Whether the Committees in Udupi town will ever manage to curb the rampant corruption in civic body? One has to wait and see.

According to the manifesto, the contractor of different development works will be paid only after 10 members of Committee signs the relevant papers.  If it becomes practical, it will ruin the chances of corporators pocketing their share of percentage of total worth of contract.

Overall, Congress has raised the hope of common folks.  Meanwhile, one has to wait and see, what would be left out of them in the form of services.

Congress has issued better manifesto during civic polls of Udupi town council.  The union government will assist in implementing agenda as specified in manifesto i -Rajya Sabha member Oscar Fernandes

Congress seems to be engaged in false assurances, first of all let them try to complete the ongoing highway four-lane conversion works that is being undertaken by National Highway Authority of India (NHAI). -Udupi MLA Raghupati Bhat.

I can help with German suppliers at attractive fee (cash not accepted..:D) 2.A friend bought a plot lying south of MGM college for some 2 lakh-chillar per cent six months ago and told me it will appreciate to 7 lakh per cent (MGM college area rate!)in 5 years. If 25% of the promises are fulfilled, then it is worth it. It is better to light a candle than blame the darkness and live in it as we have been doing so far. Optimism is the key to success and you have the RTI to follow up.

With the LNG terminal being set up an Mangalore and Dhabol-Bangalore CNG pipeline getting extended to Udupi and Mangalore, it is very much possible to bring CNG to homes of Udupi. World over smaller cities are looking at Monorail Infrastructure and Private Companies would be ready to invest in such projects in PPP model. Good to have great dreams !

Again it is election time. It is time to fool people in all possible directions to get votes and turn their backs. Be it Oscar or Bhat. The Manifesto is a bundle of false promises. In my opinion Udupi voters are wise. No one can fool them. Oscar will not be available after elections except for functions of his close relatives because he has not been elected from Udupi since 1996. Mr Bhat is busy only in roads because in such works maximum percentage can be pocketed because mud filling besides the Tar filling is unknown to the Udupi contrqactors. That is more than enough for the vehicles to topple and the roads to crack on edges. Mr Bhat does not know that main roads must be marked with white and yellow lines for safety. See the fate of Udupi city roads. NO centre markings or sidelines or Zeebra marks for road crossing. These are not there in City road safety books of Udupi? Traffic signs are absent so that one can move and return as one likes. All these aspects cost for which no budget because it doesnot include in the road maintenance budget ,is the Policy at Udupi? I think voters are very well aware. They know all the paties in election and their leaders.Beware of these points

Very good plan. Government has to execute this plan. It is indeed required.

Ragupthiji, be optimistic. Along with completing highway; why not other ambitious projects? Let us have monorail to ease traffic on growing city roads! I am thrilled about plans for Udupi. Hope it will be a reality. I am glad to note that corporators need to work for development without swindling money! In most cities of Karnataka corporators extract (extortion?) lakhs for allowing each slab of a building. As Subash Marne rightly pointed out-we need a local committee to oversee quality of road works and other projects!
