Mangalore, 10 Feb 2013: When Conrad Rachan D’Souza, 26, from Dambel went to Qatar 18 months ago it was with the hope of a better life for himself and his family. But in November 2011, an earthmover ran over him injuring him severely. His family has been running from pillar to post ever since to get their sole breadwinner back home.

A local, languishing in Qatar after a mishap, is being allegedly denied treatment and even forced to work with a urine bag attached to his body. Family members in the city are running from pillar to post to get their only breadwinner back home healthy.

Conard Rachan D’Souza (26) from Dambel in the city flew to Qatar with great hopes about 18 months ago. However, call it destiny or fate, he met with an accident and that made him bed-ridden initially.

Conrad who was working in a quarry here, was hired by a city-based company to work in Qatar as a crusher operator. The attractive salary package was too good to pass up. He served the company for nearly three months from September 2011. In November he met with an accident confining him to bed.

But but his dreams faded away when an earthmover machine hit and injured him very badly in November, 2011.

Conrad’s mother Rufina D’Souza told that her son requires major surgery. But neither the company nor the government has taken any steps to treat him. "He told us over phone that he was in hospital for nearly 15 days. He is being forced to work in his quarters. He has a urine bag attached to his body. He has to cooking and clean for his roommates. He told us that he has undergone a surgery for correction of a fractured hip," Rufina claimed.

Rufina alleges that he is not being allowed to leave Qatar. "They insist that either Conrad or one of his family members sign on some papers if he wants a ticket to return," she said. Rufina has sent a memorandum to Union minister for external affairs Salman Khurshid seeking the ministry’s intervention. Conrad has two younger sisters and an ailing father.

Silvester D’Souza is not in a position to work.

This news story has divided local Mangalorean Catholics into three camps: for, against and silent (no comments). I had hoped, with this community f only 9% in the twin district population having a lead in basic and vocational education, the need for gulf jobs would decrease or end with my generation. I was wrong. Skill sets and values imparted by our educational institutions require a fresh look.
