Mangalore: Hindu chauvinists target youth at cafe alleging immoral activity

Mangalore, 30 Jan 2013: Tension prevailed in Attavar area on Wednesday when Mangalore South Police took seven persons, including four girls, who were at a food joint, Roxx Cafe, on Attavar Road here after Bajrang Dal and Durgavahini members leveled allegations that the group indulged in immoral activity.

 

 

Probably chastened by the Home Stay attack fall out, the Hindu chauvinists did not raid, assault or molest the victims, but chose to inform the police after confirming that the youth were inside the Cafe. The police let off the youth after confirming that nothing as alleged by the group was going on at the cafe. Roxx is a three storey restaurant and smoking cigarette is allowed on third floor.

 

When police visited the spot three girls and one boy were seen smoking cigarettes. Deepak Shetty, manager of Roxx said "When we asked police, they said they have received complaint that youth smoke cigarettes in our restaurant." While police were taking the youth, two people used abusive words for waiters and youths, he alleged. Bajrang Dal activists and Vijayshree, district convenor of Durga Vahini, a wing of Bajrang Dal said residents and shopkeepers had complained to them that illegal activities were going on at the joint.

 

A chauvinist who do not want to disclose his name questioned: how can they allow students to smoke in a restaurant. Its not a bar but still a DJ plays music in the restaurant every day. However South Police station officials inquired youth for 45 minutes and allowed them to go. ACP Jaganath said "four girls age around 19 years of age were just bought to station. Nothing has happened as alleged by some persons. All those who were brought to the station for questioning have been allowed to go." Rocks Cafe owner Mohammed Ashraf said that he was not present at the cafe during the incident and asserted that it was a family joint which served ice cream, fast food and mocktails. He said the cabin in which the youth were sitting was a music lounge. Dal Convenor Sharan Pumpwell said: Locals had informed them that something fishy was going on since long and confirmed Dal members raided the place.
