Moodubelle: First Annual College Day celebrated in St. Lawrence Degree College

Moodubelle, 05 Jan 2012: The first Annual College  Day of St. Lawrence Degree College was celebrated  on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at 10 am in St. Lawrence English Medium High School hall.  Rev. Fr. Joswey Fernandes, Correspondent of St. Lawrence Educational Institutions presided over the function. Dr. Thomas Quadros, Director of Glowinstar  Academy  was the chief guest. Along with them, Commodore Jerome Castelino, Dean of the College, Dr. Eugene D’Souza, Principal, Mrs. Rita Castelino, PTA President and Vipin Machado, President of the Students Union Council were on the dais.

 

The function began with the prayer song sung by the students of the college.  Commodore Jerome Castelino giving a brief background of the college welcomed the guests on the dais and eminent  invitees in the audience.

 

Principal Dr. Eugene D’Souza read the report of the curricular and extra-curricular activities of the college since  its inception.
Two eminent personalities were honoured next.  Mr. Valerian Maurice Alva, a successful businessman in England and the Chairman of the Moodubelle Charitable Trust was honoured for his generous contribution towards the Computer Lab, Sound System and Generator which were the essential requirements of the college.  Mr. Rajendra Shetty was honoured for being elected as the President of the Belle Grama Panchayat  recently.

 

Prizes for the meritorious students who stood first among the B.A. and B.Com. students as well as those students who scored highest marks in each subject in the First Semester Examinations conducted by the Mangalore University were distributed by Dr. Thomas Quadros.

In his address, Dr. Thomas Quadros complimented the college on the occasion of the first ever Annual College Day. He said that the college has taken a small step which will lead to great progress in future. Referring to his own educational institution, Glowinstar Integrated School, Dr. Thomas said that when he started the school, there were five students in the Upper KG and 12 students in the Lower KG. Over the years the school has grown in to a full-fledged High School  affiliated to ICSE Board.  He said that if one has faith in oneself, in others and in God, he or she can achieve success in life. He emphasized on the fact that the strength of a family rests on the strength of its members. Similarly, the strength of a village and eventually that of a nation depends on the strength of the people and citizens. 

 

 

Speaking further, Dr. Thomas Quadros said that it is important to have a healthy mind in a healthy body. He made an appeal to the students to utilize all the facilities available in the institution to acquire better skills. They should nurture their talents and occasions like the Annual College Day enable them to manifest their talents in front of their parents and other guests along with their own college mates.

 

Dr. Thomas Quadros  pointed out the importance of living for others and the spirit of sacrifice. He said that all the creations of God except human beings live for others. Whereas human beings being selfish are self-serving and self-centered. He appreciated the efforts taken by the Correspondent, Rev. Fr. Joswey Fernandes, Dean, Commodore Jerome Castelino  and Principal Dr. Eugene D’Souza and the staff members and the students in starting the college and sustaining it. He hoped and wished that the college will grow in future and will enrich the education of the village.

 

Rev. Fr. Joswey Fernandes distributed prizes to the winners of various competitions conducted in anticipation of the Annual College Day. He also distributed certificates to the winners of 200x4 Relay Race for girls and boys as well as cups for the champions of athletics competition conducted jointly along with other four institutions of St. Lawrence Group of Educational Institutions. The champions are: Deril Mathias of B.Com among boys and Divya of B.A. and Anitha Acharthi of B.Com among girls.
In his message, Rev. Fr. Joswey Fernandes appreciated the wonderful address given by Dr. Thomas Quadros  with sublime thoughts and  action plan for the success of one’s life.  He also complimented the Dean, Principal, staff and students for their dedication and achievements.

The stage programme was attended Fr. Paul Sequeira, Principal of St. Lawrence PU College,  Fr. Lancy Saldanha, Principal of St. Lawrence English Medium School,  Mrs. Hilda Aranha, Senior Teacher of St. Lawrence Kannada Medium High School, Mr. Devdas Hebbar, former president of the Udupi Taluk Panchayat, Mr. Alphonse K. Alva, Vice President of the Parish Pastoral Council, Mrs. Helen D’Souza, President of the Stree Sanghattan, students and their parents, donors and invitees.

 

The stage programme was compeered by Akshath Kumar of B.A. and the vote of thanks was proposed by Vipin Machado, president of the Students Union Council.

 

Following the stage programme, the students presented variety entertainment programme. The programme was compeered by Poornima of B.A.

 

After the programme lunch was served to the guests, invitees, staff and students.
