M’belle: Three Days-long Sports meet of St. Lawrence Educational Institutions concludes success

Moodubellle, 21 December 2012: The three days-long first ever sports meet of all the five St. Lawrence Educational Institutions successfully concluded on Friday, December 21, 2012 at 1 pm following a grand valedictory function presided over by the Correspondent, Rev. Fr. Joswey Fernandes. Gerald Fernandes, former president of the Udupi Zilla Panchayat, Rajendra Shetty, member of the Belle Grama Panchayat and newly elected president of the Old Students Association of the Church Aided Higher Primary School were the guests of honour. Heads of the five educational institutions were present on the dais. Ivan D’Almeida was also present for the function.  

 

Prior to the stage function, the sports flame in the cauldron that was lighted during the inauguration of the sports meet was formally extinguished by Rajendra Shetty by pouring water to the flame. Thereafter, Gerald Fernandes ceremonially lowered the sports flag representing the five St. Lawrence Educational Institutions  which was carried by the champions of the sports meet from all the five institutions around the ground and handed over to the Physical Instructors-Joseph D’Souza, Valerian Crasta and Bharath Shetty  who were the secretaries of the sports meet. They in turn handed over the flag to the heads of the five educational institutions who were the Directors of the sports meet  who on their part formally presented the sports flag to the Correspondent, Rev. Fr. Joswey Fernandes who was the Convener of the sports meet. 

 

 

At the valedictory function, Naveen Correa, history lecturer of St. Lawerence PU College welcomed the gathering. Trophies were distributed by Gerald Fernandes, Rajendra Shetty and Ivan D’Almeida to the champions of Church Aided Higher Primary School and St. Lawrence English Medium High School. Trophies and prizes to the champions of other institutions will be distributed during the annual day celebrations of their respective institutions-St. Lawrence Composite PU College on Saturday, December 22, 2012 and St. Lawrence Degree College on Saturday, January 5, 2013.

 

Rev. Fr. Joswey Fernandes distributed prizes to the staff who had participated in the 200 meters run. Among men, Bharath Shetty, Physical Instructor of St. Lawrence English Medium High School was first followed by Valerian Crasta-Physical Instructor of St. Lawrence Kannada Medium High School and Dileep Shetty-Computer Lecturer from St. Lawrence PU College. Among women, Ms. Latha, Biology lecturer from St. Lawrence PU College stood first followed by Sr. Irene from Church Aided Higher Primary School and Ms. Alwyna D’Souza, lecturer of Chemistry from St. Lawrence PU College. The prize amount  was sponsored by Rajendra Shetty, Gerald Fernandes, Ivan D’Almeida and St. Lawrence Degree College.

 

In his address, Rev. Fr. Joswey Fernandes expressed  happiness at the successful conclusion of the three days-long sports meet and appreciated the conduct of all events smoothly by the three Physical Instructors under the guidance of Joseph D’Souza and co-operation from the heads of institutions and all staff members. He complimented the students who had actively participated in the sporting events and also other students who were present in large numbers to applaud the sports persons.

 

Devaraya Shanbhogue compeered the programme and Joseph D’Souza proposed the vote of thanks.

 

On the second day of the sports meet a number of events were held in which many students took part actively. Events were conducted simultaneously at the tracks, jumping pits and also throwing events in the quadrangle and the main ground. 

 

 

The winners in different events were awarded medals and certificates soon after the completion of the event by guests or members of the staff at the victory stand in front of the sports flag. On second day Ravindranath Rao, the sponsor of cash prizes for top scorers at the final examinations for SSLC and PUC students and his cousin Retired Colonel Kuppayyaswami Rao were present as guests. They also gave away medals and certificates to the winners. Dr. Rajeshwari Koradkal also presented medals and certificates to the winners. On the third day Henry Alva and his wife Mrs. Benedicta Alva were guests who gave away the medals and certificates at the victory stand. 

 

On the penultimate third day, Friday, December 21, 2012,  the most exciting of all events, the Relay Race was organized  right from the Church Aided Higher Primary School to the College level. There was enthusiastic  participation from students and equally there was high pitch excitement as the race was in progress as friends and supporters of the teams egged the runners to win the race. 

 

Following the end of the Relay Race at 12 noon, all the 176 scheduled  event involving 536 athletes came to a successful conclusion.  

 

 

Meanwhile, as the guests proposed that they would sponsor prizes for the 200 meters race for the staff members,  the event was quickly announced and there was enthusiastic participation mostly from younger members both men and women. There was great excitement among the students who thronged the tracks to witness the race of their teachers including Fr. Paul Sequeria, Principal of St. Lawrence Composite PU College and Sr. Irene who won the second position among women. 

 

Soon after the teachers’ race, all the officials assembled at a place and marched to the main pavilion saluting and shaking hands with the Correspondent, heads of five St. Lawrence Educational Institutions and the guests signifying the successful completion of the sports meet.  It was a great sight to behold as the staff members from all the institutions marching together as they had worked together  in conducting the events smoothly. 

 

Credit goes to Joseph D’Souza, Physical Director of St. Lawrence PU College and Physical Instructors-Valerian Crasta and Bharath Shetty for their meticulous planning and preparation in conducting successfully the first ever historic sports meet.

The participation of the students  from all the five institutions was very encouraging. Besides, the presence of  large number of students on the ground to cheer and applaud their classmates, friends and  institutions gave much required boost to the performance of the athletes  and colour to the sports meet.

Following the completion of all events, the following sports persons were declared as the Champions:

1. Church Aided Higher Primary School:  

Juniors: Deekshith S. (5 Std.) and Kum. Supritha (5 Std.)

Seniors: Hanumantha (7 Std.) and Kum. Divya (6 Std.)

 

2. St. Lawrence Englsih Medium High School:

Sub-Juniors: Slavin (5 Std.) and Kum. Reema (6 Std.)

Juniors: Sachin (8 Std.) and Kum. Viola (8 Std.)

Seniors: Bliston (10 Std.) and Kum. Lerizza (10 Std.)

 

3. St. Lawrence Kannada Medium High School:


Juniors: Rony Salins (8 Std.) and Deepak (8 Std.) & Kum. Anuradha (8 Std.)

Seniors: Rikson Aranha (10 Std.) and Mahesh Shetty (10 Std.) & Kum. Poojashree (9 Std.)

 

4. St. Lawrence PU College:


Stanis Lopez (II Puc Arts), Varun B. (I PUC Arts), Raxon Mathias (II PUC Science) and Sharoon Raj (II PUC Commerce) & Kum. Sangeetha (I PUC Science)

 

5. St. Lawrence Degree College:
