M’belle: History created as the sports meet of five St. Lawrence Educational institutions ina

Moodubelle, 19 Dec 2012: There was festive mood and carnival spirit in the huge playground of St. Lawrence Composite PU College on Wednesday, December 19, 2012 at 9.30 am as students in general and athletes in particular from five St. Lawrence Educational institutions gathered for three-days-long sports meet. For the first time in the history of the St. Lawrence Educational institutions such joint venture was organized thanks to the idea of Fr. Paul Sequeira, support from Correspondent Rev. Fr. Joswey Fernandes, co-operation from the heads and staff of all the five institutions-Church Aided Higher Primary School, St. Lawrence Kannada Medium High School, St. Lawrence English Medium High School, St. Lawrence PU College and St. Lawrence Degree College.  The entire programme was well planned and executed by three physical instructors-Joseph D’Souza, Valerian Crasta and Bharath Shetty  with the cooperation of the entire staff.

 

The inauguration of this great event was held at 9.30 am. The guests were guided to the ground through a procession led by the band entirely conducted by the students under the leadership of Santosh Amin, lecturer of Mathematics in St. Lawrence PU College. The dignitaries included the Correspondent, Rev. Fr. Joswey Fernandes who presided over the inaugural function, Kudi Vasanth Shetty, Head Master  of Shri Vishnumurthy High School, Kudi who was honoured with the Rashtraprashasthi  as best teacher as the chief guest, Mrs. Blossom D’Souza, Manager of the Syndicate Bank, the guest of honour, heads of five institutions, Alhonse K. Alva, Vice President of the Parish Council, Devdas Hebbar, president of the Old Students Association, Mrs. Vidya Shetty, president of the Parents-Teachers Association, Mrs. Gracy D’Souza, president of PTA, St. Lawrence English medium High School, Mrs. Jacintha D’Souza, Secretary of the Parish Council, Dr. H.B. Shetty  and Commodore Jerome Castelino, Dean of St. Lawrence College, Moodubelle.

 

 

Rev. Fr. Joswey Fernandes   received the salute of the sports-persons from all the five institutions as they marched past the dais in an impressive formation.  Following the march-past students representing five institutions sang the prayer addressed to St. Lawrence, the patron of the institutions.  Fr. Paul Sequeira welcomed the guests followed by the hoisting of the combined sports flag by Mrs. Blossom D’Souza. Meanwhile, the sports-persons  from all the institutions who had won medals at the taluka, district and state level ceremoniously brought the sports torch to the ground and took a lap to the ground and Sachin Nayak of St. Lawrence English Medium High School who will be representing the state at the national level handed over the torch to the president of the Parents-Teachers Association Mrs. Vidya  Shetty who lighted the main cauldron with the flames of the sports torch.

 

On the way back, the guests reviewed the squads from different institutions. Kudi  Vasanth Shetty declared the sports meet open with the word of the Olympics slogan “ Swifter, Higher, Stronger”.  Thereafter, the guests and heads of the five institutions collectively released five bunches of coloured balloons representing five institutions which flew higher and disappeared in the sky.

 

Kum. Ruvita D’Souza on behalf of all the sports-persons took the oath. This was followed by felicitation programme. Kudi Vasanth Shetty who was the old student of St. Lawrence Kannada Medium High  School was introduced by Mrs. Sarojini and was honoured by Rev. Fr. Joswey Fernandes by offering him shawl, garland, memento and fruit plate. Sachin Nayak who will be representing the state at national level sports meet was also honoured. Other sports persons who had achieved success at the taluk, district and state level were also felicitated by offering them flowers.

 

In his address, Kudi Vasanth Shetty narrated his days in the high school as the student and remembered his teachers with great respect especially the then headmaster, late Rev. Fr. VGF Rego. He also inspired the students with his words of advice especially related to the sports.

 

In his presidential message, Rev. Fr. Joswey Fernandes highlighted the importance of sports in achieving success in the life and building discipline and  promoting good health.

 

Sylvester Mathias, headmaster of Church Aided Higher Primary School proposed the vote of thanks. Mrs. Sarita D’Souza, Vice Principal of St. Lawrence College compeered the entire inaugural pprogramme.

 

In the march past St. Lawrence English Medium High School stood first where as the second position was shared by St. Lawrence College and St. Lawrence Kannada Medium High School.

 

After the inaugural function competitions in different athletics events were conducted. According  Joseph D’Souza, the Physical Director of St. Lawrence PU College, during the three days-long sports meet competitions will be held in 176 events involving 536 athletes.

 

As the competitions began there was great excitement among the students right from primary to college level as they had greater number of spectators to applaud their performance. The staff members greatly cooperated with the sports officials in conducting various events.

A sport is an integral part of student life and especially annual sports day is one of the most eagerly awaited events in a school or college calendar. I was thrilled to read on BV that all the five St. Lawrence Educational institutions gathered for three-days-long sports meet. For the first time in the history of the St. Lawrence Educational institutions such joint venture was organized. Truly! a good move and a trendsetter for all the other Institutions in Udupi district. Congratulations to all those who have been very active in taking part and winners alike. Once again good see the enthusiasm shown by the management of St. Lawrence Institutions, Moodubelle.
