Udupi: Rain floods disrupt daily life in villages once again

Moodubelle, Udupi, 19 July 2011: With the continuous rains, the flood water advanced into the cow sheds and houses of the agricultural areas in Padubelle, Alevooru, Dendooru Indrali and other areas, causing damage to materials and properties. The fields are filled with waters damaging the cultivation. In Padubelle the water has surged into the houses and the fields of Haridas Bhat, Raadha Poojarthi, Sitha Laxmi, Thomas Alva, Mukunda Bhat, Mery Alva and Peter.
Also in Alevooru the houses and the agricultural fields of Shenai Nivas, Muddappa Karkera, Leela Shedthi, Vasudev Acharya, Sudhakar Acharya, Vittal Bhat have become the target to the flood waters, causing damages. In Dendoor Indrali Thota areas among the 20 – 30 houses, the flood water has flown into 10 houses.
Speaking to this reporter of Bellevision Media Network, Sundar Shetty said that, there were big floods come before also. But now with the dams, the water is not flowing through properly and the trash gets collected and the flood has increased. Before even if there is continuous heavy rain, there was no fear of the big floods, he said.
Sachin Poojary speaking to the reporter said that, the cow sheds are covered with the flood waters and we are unable to provide the shelter to our cows and buffalos. Earlier there were vacant lands where we were able shelter our cows and buffalos outside, but now so many buildings have raised everywhere and there is hardly any place for them now, he said.

The rains, I believe, are the same. but due to lots of forest area being bulldozed, The water holding capacity of higher altitudes has reduced and thus all the water rushed down to the low lying areas. Our forests are depleting.. and that too at an alarming rate. the situation is grim.. |
