Man ends life after losing wife’s jewellery in cricket betting

Hyderabad, 10 Jun 2017: A 27-year-old businessman ended his life after losing his wife’s gold jewellery in cricket betting on Thursday at Pet Basheerabad.

 

The victim was identified as Ghanshyam, a resident of MN Reddy Nagar in Pet Basheerabad. Ghanshyam ran a grocery store at Bapuji Nagar in Bowenpally along with his father Duga Ram. The family migrated to Hyderabad from Rajasthan a few decades ago.

 

On Wednesday night, Ghanshyam and his family went to attend a relative’s wedding at a temple in Subhash Nagar, Bowenpally. While rest of the family was at the wedding, Ghanshyam returned home at midnight.

 

When his family came home in the wee hours of Thursday, they found the bedroom door locked from inside. "When Ghanshyam did not answer their calls for a long time, they broke the door latch and found him hanging from the ceiling fan with a bed sheet," Pet Basheerabad inspector D V Ranga Reddy said.

 

Local police were alerted through police control room about the incident and cops recovered a suicide note from the bedroom. In the note written in Hindi using English script, Ghanshyam said: "Mere suicide ka ek hi reason hai... woh meri buri adat hai betting ki. Mere Maut ke piche sirf betting hi hai."

 

Though police found the suicide note, surprisingly they could not recover Ghanshyam’s cell phone which could have the details of cricket betting organisers. "His phone is switched off and we could not locate it yet. We are getting the call details of the victim to identify the betting racket organisers," the inspector said.

 

During the preliminary probe, police came to know that Ghanshyam got married on April 28 and in addition to losing his own money he also lost the jewellery of his wife in cricket betting. "Ghanshyam lost 280 grams of gold jewellery belonging to his wife in betting. In a few days time, the family is to attend another wedding and as the pressure increased on him to bring the gold jewellery back so that the women in the family could wear them for the event, he committed suicide," a police official said.

 

Cops shifted the body to Gandhi Hospital for post-mortem and the family of the victim wanted the cops to zero in on the betting gang organisers. Based on the complaint lodged by the victim’s family, police registered a suspicious death case under Section 174 of the CrPC. "We are in the process of obtaining the call data records of the victim and his phone will also be recovered soon," SI B D Prem Kumar said.
