Mangaluru: Nitte University celebrates World Environment Day

Mangaluru, 05 Jun 2017: ‘Connecting people to Nature’ is the call given by the United Nations which implores us as global citizens to step out of our concrete jungles and spend a few precious minutes with nature to appreciate her bountiful gifts to mankind and acknowledge its importance in our lives. The very existence and survival of human civilization in tomorrows’ world is largely dependent on our attitude towards our environment today,’ said Nitte University vice chancellor Professor Dr S Ramananda Shetty, on the occasion of World Environment Day.

 

He urged the younger generation to respect nature and not pollute her. Several developed nations of the world have cared too less to contain pollution and are today facing nature’s fury through climate change impacts and disasters.

 

 

The program was a part of the Nitte University Green Initiatives Program (NUGIP), led by Dr Smitha Hegde, Professor, Nitte University Centre for Science Education and Research (NUSCER) and also the environment officer.

 

The faculty, students and other members of Nitte University and the NSS wing took active part in planting trees of local significance in Panir campus, here. On this occasion, the Nitte Institute of Architecture is conducting a workshop on use of sustainable construction material wherein use of environment friendly and aesthetically pleasing material such as bamboos for construction is being practically demonstrated. Students will also be trained in designing and innovative applications in turning waste to wealth.

 

Dr Indrani Karunasagar, director, NUSCER, welcomed the gathering. Vinod Aranha, director, NIA,proposed the vote of thanks.
