Udupi: KPTCL delegates visit UPCL Plant; observe Environ Day

Udupi, 06 Jun 2017: The delegates from Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL) visited Adani-owned UPCL plant to study the feasibility on evacuation process of 400 KVA line for the proposed UPCL’s expansion of 2x800 MW, here, on Monday, June 5. The team also visited the transmission line corridor of 400 KVA line.
The time, which was led by H Nagesh, director - transmission of KPTCL, were welcomed by UPCL’s executive director Kishore Alva. During their visit, Alva explained the process of power generation of UPCL and informed about the latest technologies like FGD and ESP adopted in the plant to safeguard the environment. He added that UPCL is presently generated 1,200 MW and the entire power generated is being distributed to the State of Karnataka. With the proposed expansion of 1,600 MW, UPCL’s total capacity would be 2,800 MW and the entire power is earmarked for the Karnataka State, he added. He also informed that to ensure full utilization of the fly ash generated with the present units and the proposed units, a cement manufacturing plant of 2 MTPA capacity would be set-up in the plant premises.
Later on Alva informed that UPCL, after been taken over by Adani Group, is giving importance to the environment protection measures. More than 4 lac tree plantations have been made inside the plant premises and every year company is distribution fruit bearing sapling to the students studying in state-run school, he said. Company is also planting the trees in the locations identified by the gram panchayats.
Alva further informed that UPCL is executing many development activities in the field of Education, Health, Rural Infrastructure Development, Sports & Culture promotion and Environment under its CSR. It has declared a total CSR grant of Rs 22.73 crore for 7 gram panchayats and is executing village development works worth Rs. 1 crore in all the 7 gram panchayats every year. He also told that, with the project expansion UPCL has earmarked Rs 275 crore under CSR and every year it will spend Rs 8 crore towards CSR for the next 25 years.
The delegates were later on taken to the various processing units of the UPCL plant.
Speaking on the occasion, H Nagesh appreciated the way the plant is being maintained and operated. He applauded the greenery maintained inside the plant and the company’s concern on the environment protection measures. He also expressed happiness about the plant performance of 99 percent PLF. There is a demand for the power by the State of Karnataka and the UPCL’s project expansion will meet the requirements. He also told that the visit to the transmission line corridor and plant has made him happy.
MESCOM managing director Chikkananjappa expressed happiness on the UPCL’s CSR activities and the environment concern of the company.
KPTCL chief engineer Hanumantharayappa welcomed Adani Group’s vision of producing 20000 MW by 2020.
