Udupi, 1 April 2011:  The crucial SSLC examinations that would determine the academic fate of a record number of 8.73 lac students of the Karnataka State commenced under tight security on Friday, 1 April 2011 at 10.30 am. The examinations will continue till 13 April.

On the first day of the examination, students  answered question papers in the first language subject including Kannada, Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Sanskrit and Urdu.

Out of  8.73 lacs of students appearing for the SSLC examination this year, 4.66 lacs are boys and 4.06 lacs are girls. Around 7.74 lacs of students will be taking the Board exams for the first time. Among these 21,816 are private candidates. Around 76,000 candidates are repeaters.  There are  2,629 special children appearing for the examinations. The exams are being conducted  in 2,951 centers.

The Karnataka Secondary Education examination Board (KSEEB) has taken ample precaution to prevent malpractices, especially copying in the examination by the students. Besides two invigilators at every centre, the Board has appointed flying squads in each district and block to monitor the conduct of the examination.

According to Fr. Paul Sequeira, principal of St. Lawrence Composite PU College, Moodubelle, 90 students from St. Lawrence High school and 20 students from St. Lawrence English Medium School  are  appearing for the examination.  Rest of the students are from Alevoor and Patla and repeaters.

While the students and their parents are  serious about  the SSLC examinations, the finals of the ICC World Cup between India and Sri Lanka on Saturday and the Indian Premier League (IPL) starting from 8 April 2011 seem to divert their attention. This is a great worry to the parents of the SSLC students. However, realizing the seriousness of the examinations, the students and their parents have to devise a plan by which the students may be able to concentrate on their studies.
