Udupi: Over 5000 runners to partake in Manipal Marathon on Mar 5

Udupi, 03 Mar 2017: Over 5,000 runners have registered to run in the four categories of Manipal Marathon to be flagged off from KMC Greens, here on Sunday, March 5 at 6.30am by Dr Ranjan Pai, CEO and managing director of Manipal Education and Medical Group. About 800 runners will take part in the 21.1 kilometers half marathon and the 10 kilometers race. The remaining have registered for the five-kilometre and three-kilometer runs.
The first edition of the half marathon has attracted runners from other states of the country as well and Manipal will witness the biggest marathon to be held in this region. Krnataka state minister for sports, youth Empowerment and fisheries Pramod Madhwaraj will be the chief guest at the prize distribution to be held at the Greens, here at 9.00am.
The who’s who of the district will be present for the marathon which is being organized by Manipal Runners’ Club and Protons Running of Bengaluru, under the aegis of Manipal University, and assisted by the Udupi District Athletic Association. The event is co-sponsored by Manipal University, Adani and Syndicate Bank.
Manipal Marathon carries a cash prize of Rs 5.5 lac. The amount will be the same for men and women. The winners in the half marathon will be richer by Rs 70,000 each, the runners-up will get Rs 35,000 each and those finishing third will get rupees 20,000 each. Fourth to tenth place finishers will also be given cash prizes. The prize money for the 10 kilometers race is Rs 10,000; 7,500 and 5,000 respectively for the first three places in both sections.
The races will all start and end at KMC greens. A Carnival De Manipal will also be held during the event. Volunteer Services Organization (VSO) of Manipal University will present it. There will be, yoga, sumba, DJ, dance floor and other fun activities to raise and spread awareness regarding acquired and life style diseases.
