Udupi, 09 Dec 2016: The construction of fishmongers market at Shirva, near here that was inaugurated by district-in-charge minister Vinay Kumar Sorake on November 14, 2015 is of sub-standard quality, alleged Shirva gram panchayat president Varija Poojarti.
The market was built @ Rs 85 lac with the funds from Coastal Development Authority and the contract was awarded to Nirmiti Kendra, state-owned enterprise. However, Nirmiti Kendra had awarded the contract to a sub contractor who had done the shoddy work amidst ZP elections.
Varija alleged that the poor quality of work has been reported to concerned department officials and denied any role of gram panchayat in this regard.
The uproar began because the tyres of a fisheries mini-truck was caved in the interlock-laid area, when the laterite slap on drainage-pit broke within 1 year of completion of work on Thursday, December 8. The incident led verbal abuse among fishmongers and gram panchayat president. The fishmongers demanded the contractor come to the spot.
The tense situation prevailed for sometime. Meanwhile, Shirva sub-inspector and panchayat president Varija assured the fishmongers to resolve the issue at the earliest.
