Udupi, 26 Nov 2016: The tollgate that was set up at Hejamady on National Highway 66 without fulfilling the basic needs of local residents is unjustified, said Deviprasad Shetty, president of gram panchayat Federation.
Addressing the media persons at Press Club in Kaup, near here on Friday, November 25, Deviprasad said that largest tollgate and truck yard in Karnataka has been set up along the newly-laid 4 lane highway at Hejamady, near here. Meanwhile, the functioning of tollgate was stalled owing to the protest by the residents of Hejamady led by local MLA Vinay Kumar Sorake, a few months ago. The national highway contractor Navyug plans to begin the functioning of newly-set up tollgate from December 1. The demands mentioned in the petitions submitted to Deputy Commissioner of Udupi district by the leaders of local residents of Hejamady are not adhered to by the contractor. The locals demanded skywalk as the area is thickly populated and heavy traffic would put their lives in peril. The contractor was sought to employ locals in tollgate that was not looked into. The locals seek Deputy Commissioner to intervene and compel the contractor to full their demands and then only issue green signal for the tollgate to begin functioning, urged Deviprasad.
Nagarika Horata Samiti president Gulam Mohammed Hejamady, secretary Shekar Hejamady and others were present at the press meet.
