Students of DAHS, Manipal University conducted farm seminar at Hirebettu

Manipal, 11 Oct 2016: Department of Allied Hospitality Studies, MSc HTM, WGSHA, Manipal University had conducted Swachch Bharath awareness to the students of Hirebettu School through Student Empowerment for Environmental Development (SEED) project.
SEED project is to earn course credit, develop professional skills, gain first-hand work experience, and advance Manipal University’s sustainability goals. SEED is an effective way to build applied campus sustainability projects into the course through various community outreach programmes.
The SEED Sustainability Program advances campus sustainability by creating partnerships between students, community and faculty on innovative and impactful environmental projects. The SEED Program provides opportunities to be an active student citizen.
Students who have participating in a SEED project will help them to prepare for professional work in their field, and help them develop career-relevant experience. MSc HTM students have already completed more than 25 SEED projects including environmental awareness, training to self-help women group, School garden projects, Vermicomposting consultation, Waste recycling projects in schools, computer education, English coaching to school children, arts and craft classes, Swachch Bharath abyan camps, beach cleaning awareness projects, village adoption and development scheme etc. in the community since 2015.
The Environmental and Swachch Bharath SEED project at Hirebettu School on 8th October 2016 was led by student leader under the guidance of faculty members. The MSc HTM student team had taken the Hirebettu School students to Century farm to promote the clean farming concepts through a farm seminar.
Mr Rajaram Bhat, the farm owner in his inauguration speech of farm seminar, mentioned that farming is one of the sustainable practices of maintaining environmental balance by planting and reusing the waste from the farm thus keeping the environment clean.
Students were introduced organic farming, farm waste recycling, sustainable poultry farming, biogas production and composting as part of the farm visit. Mr Varadaraj of Century farm explained the biogas production.
Prof Parvadhavardhini, Principal, WGSHA, in her opening remarks said that environmental projects are the best ways to promote sustainable curriculum through learning by doing.
Prof Valsaraj, HOD of DAHS had explained the need of farming and conservation of ecosystem. He had also demonstrated how farming can be the part of Swachch Bharath Abhiyan on environment . Prof Senthil pointed out that recycling is the best way to keep the environment clean.
Students of MSc HTM have conducted various traditional village games for the Hirebettu School Children. There was a competition of making craft items from the recyclable waste materials. Mrs Sumangala, Headmistress and other teachers of Hirebettu School were present. Mr Rajaram Bhat has distributed prize to the students.
The SEED project students team include Ms Megha, Ms Rashmi, Mr Shravan, Mr Sangye, Mr Rohan, Mr Salman, Ms Tanvi and Ms Sumedha of MSc Hospitality and Tourism Management, WGSHA, DAHS, Manipal University.
