Udupi: Curriculum Convention for Nursing at Manipal University

Udupi, 16 Sep 2016: Manipal College of Nursing (MCON), Manipal University, Manipal, here organised Curriculum convention for the second successive year on Monday September 12.

 

Dr Linu Sara George, Professor Manipal College of Nursing and the Convener of the convention welcomed the resource persons and all the participants.  

 

Dr Anice George, Dean Manipal College of Nursing, Manipal University addressed the gathering with a note to orient the entire team of students, alumni, parents and faculty on what a convention wishes to grasp from the group discussion. She highlighted the need to bring about changes in the curriculum that might contribute to the growth and innovation in nursing education and practice.

 

 

Dr K Ramnarayan in his presidential inaugural address highlighted ‘Convention is being held to discuss, debate, descent, disagree and dialogue and bring a decision that can make a change in its quality of education.’ He described curriculum as a wind that is something one cannot see but can experience and ultimately see the effect.

 

He further said the curriculum can become effective only when all the stake holders are comfortable. Looking into the hidden curriculum will definitely bring about awareness about the unintentional learning that are unconsciously learnt through the program. Curriculum innovation can happen through obvious observations of the intended learning and also through unintended learning. Teachers need to create a formal forum to discuss and look back for a better generation next. The day long event began with a brain storming session framed into 8 groups randomly selected from all levels on the two themes - Speculation curriculum and contemporary curriculum for the P B B Sc and M Sc nursing curriculum.

 

The moderators Dr Jaya Kuruvilla, principal, P D Hinduja National Hospital and Medical Research Centre, Mumbai in her address said that Curriculum convention was a new term in nursing but Manipal has taken a very crucial step ahead. She further highlighted that nursing curriculum is the most comprehensive curriculum across any medical science curriculum. Preparation of students with multiple dimensions in subjects helps students find suitable job today. Manipal may play a pivotal role in the curriculum revision that is likely to be taken up by Indian nursing council in 2017.

 

Dr Fatima D ’Silva Dean of Nitte Usha Institute of Nursing Sciences, Nitte University, and Mangalore emphasized on Credit based system to help our nursing graduates find a better place across the globe. Add on subjects and open electives would make them more competent for the present health care market.

 

The day long programme had brain storming sessions by the students, alumni, faculty and parents and each group came out with suggestions for modification and newer instructional strategies that could make learning experience more meaningful.

 

The session concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr Judith Noronha, the Associate Dean, MCON, Manipal.
