Mangaluru: St Aloysius College students get training on disaster management

Mangaluru, 12 Sep 2016: The department of journalism of St Aloysius College (Autonomous) in collaboration with Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organization (SSSSO), disaster management team of Karnataka, organized a National level disaster management awareness training program here on Sunday, September 11.

 

The event was inaugurated by Dr Alwyn D’Sa, vice principal of St Aloysius College who was the chief guest for the event.

In his inaugural address, Dr D’Sa said that today was the day of action and not just words and it is the time for youth to become superman and superwoman to serve people. Sri Padmanabha Pai, the district president of SSSSO motivated the students by stressing that learning is not enough but it is the will to serve that is more important.

 

Fr William Marcel SJ, vice principal of Maffei block, in his presidential address spoke on the necessity of being prepared to face the catastrophes in life.

 

Various sessions were held for the students by the team headed by Captain V K Kadam. The first session on fire fighting was dealt by Raj Kumar and Gopal. The students were first told about the most basic way to extinguish fire, by cutting of any of the components required to start fire. He quoted very relevant and pertinent examples on how we can apply firefighting in our daily lives. It also included a mock drill by the Mangaluru Fire department headed by Shekara, demonstrating fire extinguishing and water jet techniques. Students were also given a tour of the fire engines.

 

The students were also informed about the different types of disasters like cyclones, landslides, floods, tsunamis and earthquakes. G R Vijaya Kumar then took a session on CPR and first aid. The other practical sessions included emergency techniques like making stretchers as bare necessity as using the hands to the clothes, the hands on experience of learning the nine important knots and several other techniques. The program ended with a valedictory function with Dr Vishaz Pinto as the chief guest, the Dean of Arts faculty who spoke about Sri Sathya Sai, his life and his teachings. The organization members and the students then lighted the candle of wisdom and everybody was asked to reflect on one particular moment to ponder upon. A total of 300 students participated in the event.
