ICYM Pangla Parish Unit organizes unique Monti-Fest sports event

Pangla/Shankerpura, 09 Sep 2016: The feast of Nativity of B.V. Mary is celebrated all over the globe on 8th of September that involves Showering of flowers to Infant Mary statue, Holy Eucharistic Mass, blessing of New Corn (Novem) followed by distribution of sweets. After that all family members settle down for unique vegetable meal in the afternoon which is very traditional harvest feast we follow from our ancestors came from Goa.

 

However, in Pangla Parish we have the tradition of meeting at the ground soon after the traditional lunch for the sports event that was organized in our Parish from the time when Bishop Paris was serving as a priest in Pangla Parish. It’s an unique sports event where little kids from the KG to the veterans of 50 plus enjoy a full afternoon participating in an unique sports that includes races, one leg race, three leg race, Short Put throw, slow cycle race and most exiting are the breaking the pot tied about 15 feet high and tug-of-war. It is an event most memorable traditional events to watch and enjoy every moment.

 

 

This year too this unique and most wonderful sports event called: Monti-Fest Khela Spordo was organized by our youngsters ICYM members of Pangla Parish.

 

The grand sports event begins around 2.30pm with the race competition beginning with little kids of KJ and followed by teenagers and youngsters up to PU College, followed by other unique games, such as slow cycle race, short put, bombing the city for all ages.

 

In between the sport event an inauguration of the small building facility for Midday Meal built by our Parish was inaugurated by Fr. Leslie D’Souza (Parish Priest) at 3.00pm. It’s a much bigger area which can cater upto 100 to 150 children to sit and enjoy the afternoon meal with good cooking facility, cleaning area and washing.

 

The specialty of the day is breaking the pot that usually filled with sweets. This year too this most entertaining sport event took place participated by 25 members each male and female and watched by all the parishioners supporting their candidates and applauding.

 

The final grand event of the day was the tug-of-war that took place between the wards of the parish. Five wards each group of ladies and gents took place in this amazing show of strength event. This unique event is supported and cheered by each ward members.

 

The final prizes are based on total no of points generated by each ward and this year St. Antony Ward was the winner accumulating the highest point.

 

On the occasion Fr. Rayan D’Souza and Fr. Praveen Martis both belong to Pangala Parish were present and wished the people of Pangla Happy Feast of Nativity. Oliver D’Sa, President ICYM welcome the gathering after the sport event concluded for the Prize distribution Ceremony. He thanked everyone involved in organizing the event including YCS members who were the part of the organizing sports event.

 

A brief prize distribution ceremony took place at the school stage wherein Fr. Leslie D’Souza distributed the prizes to all winners of the day and also the sports event and other competitions such as Singing and Fancy dress competitions held through out the month. Mark Vaz (Vice President- Parish Council) and Simmy D’Souza (Secretary- Parish Council) were present on the occasion. All the ICYM members involved in organizing this wonderful sports event. Domian Noronha (PT St. John’s School) conducted all the sports.
