Bantwal: City students get taste of rural living at Allipade

Bantwal, 28 Aug 2016: The students of Roshni Nilaya School of Social Work, Valencia, Mangaluru spent a day playing rural games at a paddy field, owned by Gilbert Noronha at Allipade that lies in the limits of Devasyapadoor gram panchayat, near here on Saturday August 27.
Karnataka legislative council chief whip Ivan D’Souza was the chief guest.
Speaking on the occasion, Ivan said that an outing for the city-bred students in a rural village gives an opportunity to learn the agrarian culture and foster the bond with country folks. It also inspires the students to follow the discipline as farming needs timely nurturing for them to become successful in life.
Fr Gregory Pereira, parish priest of St Antony’s parish, Allipade, near here inaugurated the programme by unfurling the paddy sheaves.
Fr Gregory said that paddy cultivation is an ancient profession in erstwhile Tulunadu. The ancient people toiled in the farmlands to grow paddy that sustained many families. The need of the hour is to encourage rural youth to take interest in paddy cultivation.
Bantwal traffic sub-inspector Chandrashekarayya lighted the sports torch on the occasion.
Chandrashekarayya and Roshni Nilaya School of Social Work arts lecturer Navin felicitated Ibrahim, the owner of Kambla racing buffaloes.
The students welfare officer Evelyn Bennis, Gilbert Noronha, Denzel Noronha, Leo Fernandes, gram panchayat member Suvarna Kumar Jain, Asumpta Prem Frank, Vincent Pinto, entrepreneur Vijay Kumar, lecturers and others were present.
All College Students Union president Mitun Sequeira welcomed the gathering. The principal Dr Flossy Rayappan delivered the preliminary address. Alumnus Prakash proposed vote of thanks. Mubarish compered the programme.
The students spent the entire Saturday competing in various rural games at the paddy field.
