World Breastfeeding Week inaugurated at Fr Muller Collge of Nursing, Mangaluru

Mangaluru, 12 Aug 2016: The World Breast Feeding week was inaugurated at the Hospital Conference Hall of Father Muller Medical College Hospital, recently. Rev Fr Ajith Menezes, Assistant Administrator of Hospital was the chief guest and Dr Naveen Chandra, Taluk Health Officer; Mangaluru was the guest of honor. The theme ‘Breast feeding: a key to sustainable development’ was unfolded by Dr Naveen Chandra and he enlightened the audience on the importance of breast feeding and focused on the activities of the government in promoting mother and child health. A poster competition was organized on the occasion and best poster was awarded. Rev Fr Ajith Menezes, chief guest congratulated the organizers for observing the week and promoting the practice of natural nourishment through breast feeding. He appreciated the mothers and encouraged them to continue in selflessly giving themselves in sharing their lives in the upbringing of their families.

 

 

On 2nd August 2016, a health play on the Importance of Breastfeeding was staged by the OBG Nursing post graduate students of the College of Nursing at the Anganwadi of Community Health Centre, Bantwal along with the Women and Child Development Society of Bantwal Taluk. Various areas of the theme were also depicted in the play and it was well appreciated by the organizers and the audience. The programme ended with refreshment. 

 

A periodic health talk on “Breastfeeding” was aired on the public address system of the hospital throughout the week for the benefit of the patients and their relatives by the faculty and students of OBG Nursing Department.

 

 

On 3rd August, a quiz on Breastfeeding was conducted by the faculty and students of OBG Nursing Department, for the mothers of the maternity wards. The mothers enthusiastically participated in the quiz competition. Prizes were awarded to those mothers who scored highest points in the quiz. 

 

The video on ‘Amritha Bindhu’ was displayed at the OBG Outpatient Department by the faculty and students of OBG Nursing Department for all the expectant women and nursing mothers and this display continued for the rest of the week.

 

 

On 4th August, a health play was organized in the Urban Health Centre, Jeppu. About 20 mothers benefitted from this. The students enacted a play and educated the women visiting the health centre on breastfeeding and its benefits, methods of breastfeeding, expression of breast milk and storage, benefits of breastfeeding over bottle feeding, breast complications due to poor breastfeeding practices, features of healthy breastfeed baby, contraindications of breastfeeding and drugs prohibited during breastfeeding. Doctors from Medical College clarified the doubts of the mothers and motivated the mothers to continue breastfeeding until the child is two years old. Followed by the health play, video on breastfeeding (Amritha Bindu) was played.

 

 

On 5th August 2015, a health play on Importance of Breastfeeding was staged by the OBG Nursing post graduate students of the College of Nursing at the Obstetrics and Gynaecology OPD for all mothers. 

 

On 6th August Health talk was staged by the students and faculty of OBG Nursing Department of the College of Nursing at the maternity ward for all mothers and their caretakers.
