Bantwal: Survival of mankind lies in sustaining nature - Shakuntala Shetty

Bantwal, 07 Jul 2016: The vegetation is on the verge of extinction in the guise of development. The reckless deforestation is causing environmental imbalance. The survival of humanity lies in sustaining nature, said state parliamentary affairs secretary Shakuntala T Shetty.

 

Shakuntala was speaking during Vanamahotsav programme that was jointly organized by Parisara Jagruti Samiti – Alike, Bantwal taluk working journalists Association, Bantwal Press Club, in collaboration with Vittal sub division forest department at Kempugudde, Billampadav, here on Thursday July 7.

The planting of saplings suitable to soil leads to aforestation in a small landholding. The deforestation forces the wild animals to stray into inhabited lands, while there is urgency to plant saplings in reserved forests that sustain wild animals and birds, added Shakuntala.

 

Speaking on the occasion, Jeddu Ayurveda Clinic – Dr J Ganapati Bhat said, ‘Out of 1.40 species of plants, 70,000 varieties are thriving in Western Ghats. Around 30,000 species are on the verge of extinction,’ said Dr Bhat. He urged the gathering to grow plants in their households for posterity.   

Vittal sub division Deputy Forest Officer (DFO) Lokesh S N sought the support of people towards the campaign of government in planting 1 crore saplings in sustaining future generation. He also urged to contact the department if anyone needs saplings to plant in their household.

 

The taluk working journalists Association president Mounesh Vishwakarma in his presidential address said that planting saplings for the namesake will not do justice for Vanamahotsav. The plants should be nurtured to become trees.

 

Rama Bhat, managing trustee of Mookambika temple – Alangar, Jaycees Club of Vittal president Babu Koppala, Bantwal taluk panchayat member Padmanabha Naik Alike, Alike gram panchayat president Padmanabha Poojary Sannaguttu, members Jayadish Muliya, Mukambika M Bhat, Alike Vyavasaya Sahakari Sangha president Kana Eshwar Bhat, Kepu gram panchayat member Abdul Karim Kuddupadav, Vittal sub-inspector Prakash Devadiga, police personnel Praveen Rai, Ramesh and Rakshit Rai, Association silver jubilee celebration Committee secretary Sandeep Salian, treasurer Kishore Peraje, Association joint secretary Chandrashekar Kalmale, Press Club vice president Vishnugupta Punacha and others were present.

 

Association vice president Udayashankar Nirpaje welcomed the gathering. Parisara Jagruti Samiti – Alike convener Billampadav Narayan Bhat proposed vote of thanks. Dr B N Mahalinga Bhat, principal of Government PU College, Gandhi Nagar, Sullia compered the programme.

 

Over 50 varieties of saplings including rosewood, teakwood, tamarind, jackfruit, neem, blackberry, lemon, wild frankincense were planted on the occasion.
