New Delhi, 14 Jun 2016: After partying all night at a friend’s house, a drunk BBA student mowed down two men with his Honda City car and left a youth severely injured in west Delhi, early on Monday.

Rishabh Rawat, 21, had to travel just 3 km from Shiv Nagar to his house in Janakpuri, but he turned the five-minute drive into a remorseless killing spree. The impact of bodies smashed his car’s windscreen in two places, leaving a gaping hole on the driver’s side, but he kept going.

When a constable finally forced him to stop, he staggered out of the car and demanded a cigarette lighter. He then told the police to get compensation for the victims from his father.

The slaughter started soon after Rawat left for home around 6am. He took a U-turn near Tihar Jail and started zigzagging. Kameshwar Prasad , was near Gate 4 of the jail complex when Rawat rammed him.

Prasad was thrown against a tree and then hit a wall. Police said he died on the spot due to head injuries.

Rawat swung his car around at the next U-turn and sped on even though a crowd was gathering around Prasad’s body. Locals alerted constable Parvesh, who was patrolling on a bike, but Rawat did not heed his signal to stop.

He turned right towards Janakpuri C-block and ran over Santosh, who was cleaning a car near C-5 block. The City crushed Santosh’s abdomen and a leg, but even this second impact did not bring Rawat to his senses.

He turned right yet again and sped down the wrong side before hitting Ashwini Anand, 67 . Anand was thrown against a car parked by the road and landed about 20 metres behind it. Constable Parvesh, who was close behind Rawat, finally managed to overtake him and blocked the road with his bike. Sources said the constable might have been run over too had he not turned on the hooter on his motorcycle.

Police found bottles of liquor inside the car. When they asked Rawat to accompany them to Janakpuri police station, he refused at first and then told them to get compensation for the victims from his father.

He was arrested under sections 304 (culpable homicide) and 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide) of IPC and sent to Tihar Jail in judicial custody.

Section 304 IPC was also applied in the hit-and-run case. Usually, police apply the milder Section 304A in accident cases which allows the accused to get bail from the police station. Rawat’s father, who runs a hardware store in Janakpuri, was informed and the car impounded. Police said he had gifted the car to his son in December.

DCP-West Pushpender Kumar said a special team led by SHO RS Meena will investigate the case and a chargesheet will be filed at the earliest.

The bodies of Anand and Prasad were handed over to their families on Monday evening.
