Woman alleges police of misbehaviour; submits appeal to IGP

Mangaluru/Udupi, 03 Jun 2016: A young woman from Kodi Kanyana has alleged that the Sub-Inspector and Constable at Brahmavar police station misbehaved with her during an inquiry in her brother’s assault case.

 

The lady submitted an appeal to West Zone IGP Arun Chakravarthi at Mangaluru on Thursday.

 

 

Speaking at a press meet, she said that her brother was attacked by miscreants at Brahmavar due to previous enmity and he was admitted to a government hospital. “The Sub-Inspector and Constable arrived at the hospital to gather information regarding the case and asked us to compromise. However, when we refused, my brother was assaulted and they behaved indecently with me and also threatened me.”

 

She added, “When I approached the Superintendent of Police of Udupi to seek justice, he spoke in favour of the police and threatened to register a case against me. I then approached the Human Rights Universal Foundation for justice. Though the Foundation brought the matter to the attention of the SP, he failed to take any action. Thus, I approached the IGP on Thursday and submitted an appeal and he assured me of further inquiry.”

 

Foundation president Prashanth P, Women’s Unit president Jayashri Bhat and Secretary Sajini Vijay were present for the meet. They said that they would fight the case till justice was given to the victim.

 

Udupi Superintendent of Police, Annamalai issued a statement on Thursday with regard to the case. The statement is as follows: On May 25, the woman sent me message saying she and her brother were abused by unknown persons by phone. I sent her message back saying that she could go to Brahmavar police station. When the woman sent me a message that she feared to go to Brahmavar police station, I sent her a message saying that she could meet the inspector there. Then I received a message that she went to Kota police station where her case was registered. Brahmavar Inspector has submitted a report to me through Udupi DySP regarding the case. I have already sent a notice to the sub- inspector and head constable as to why they could not behave properly with the woman.”

 

“The woman came to my office on May 27 with representatives of human rights and said that we should register a case of rape against the police official. As prima facie it does not look like a case of rape, I have told her that it was not possible to so. Yet she has the right to lodge a complaint regarding the same, I explained to her. As superintendent of police, it is my job to maintain law and order in the district. At the same time I have the duty to protect the police personnel who are discharging their duties. I want to state here that no discrimination or favouritism was done in this case. There was no rape as alleged. But as per the misbehaviour is concerned, notice has been sent. As the press meet was held in Mangaluru instead of Udupi, I issue this press statement so that people from Mangaluru know about the incident.”
