Requiem Mass offered for Bishop Alphonsus D’Souza SJ at St. Lawrence Church, Moodubelle

Udupi, 13 May 2016: A Requiem Mass was held for the soul of Most Rev. Dr. Bishop Alphonsus D’Souza SJ Bishop of Raiganj (West Bengal) and native of Moodubelle St. Lawrence Parish who passed away on 30th April 2016 after serving Bishop for 27 years.
The Requiem mass was concelebrated by HE Bishop Gerald Isaac Lobo of Udupi Diocese along with Rev. Fr. Lawrence D’Souza (Secretary Education Board), Rev. Fr. Fred Mascarenhas (Vicar Udupi), Rev. Fr. Clement Mascarenhas (Parish Priest Moodubelle). Many priests belonging to Udupi Diocese also joined in the Holy Eucharistic Mass).
Ronald Saby, nephew of Bishop Alphonsus read a brief biography of Bishop and highlighted his great achievements from the humble beginning of school days in Moodubelle until he breathed last serving in Lord’s Viniyard with the people of his diocese especially bringing up life of poor people.
In his brief and meaningful homily Fr. Lawrence D’Souza explained that we should not accumulate treasure beyond our limit instead think of treasure after our death. He narrated story of Emperor Alexander who conquered several nations but was sad that he had to leave everything and go and ultimately realized everything he won and plundered was worthless. He said Bishop Alphonsus did not accumulate any wealth but always thought of poor and downtrodden and helped them through building educational institutions, hospitals and took care of his flock of his diocese and earned wealth in heaven.
A large number of family members and friends attended the mass. Fr. Clement Mascarenhas proposed vote of thanks. The attendees were served with snacks at the end of the mass.
