Final stage of work at Malpe Port proposed at Rs 19 crore

Udupi, 26 April 2016: Udupi MLA Pramod Madhwaraj has said that the final stage of work at the Malpe port at Padukere had been proposed at an estimated cost of Rs 19 crore; after the work was done, the port would be able to accommodate more fishing boats.

 

Addressing the media, he said that Rs 49.90 crore was spent for the third phase work and would be inaugurated by the Chief Minister.

 

The Malpe Port is able to accommodate 1,500 boats and in the third stage can accommodate as many as 500 boats. Rs 25 lakh was also spent for concreting the road that connects the third stage of the port. Apart from this, dredging was also taken up at a cost of Rs 2.2 crore, he added.

 

He informed that the work was supposed to begin in February, but began in March due to technical issues; however, it would resume after monsoon and would be completed in six months.

 

The slipway was built at a cost of Rs 2.39 crore to help fishermen to pull up the boats mechanically; previously it was done manually and a huge sum was charged. The work on the bridge connecting Malpe-Padukere at a cost of Rs 14 crore will be completed by July. The bridge is about half-a-kilometer and will connect Kaup, Uliyargioli and Kankoda and proposals have been submitted to have Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JnNURM) buses on the route, the MLA informed.
