Udupi: Manipal College of Nursing observes World Diabetic Day with sensitization programs

Udupi, 10 Apr 2016: The department of community health nursing, Manipal College of Nursing (MCON) Manipal, Manipal University, here organized various activities as part of World Health Day that was themed, Beat Diabetes: Scale up prevention, strengthen care and enhance surveillance.

 

Poster competition was organized for the faculty and students of Manipal University on April 6, based on the World Health Day theme.

 

Professor Dr Pawan Kumar, department of community medicine, KMC, Manipal inaugurated the event.

 

About 35 posters were presented by the participants. Shalini G Nayak and Janet Alva assistant professor of MCON Manipal, Manipal University, won the first prize and Soumya Alex, assistant lecturer of Manipal School of Nursing, Manipal University won the second prize.

 

Formal programme of World health day was held at conference hall, Shirdi Sai Baba Cancer and Research Centre, Kasturba Hospital, Manipal on April 7 from 9.00am to 1.00pm.

 

 

The programme was inaugurated by the chief guest Udupi zilla panchayat chief executive officer Priyanka Mary Francis along with the other dignitaries.

 

Speaking on the occasion, Priyanka highlighted the global statistics of diabetes mellitus which has moved from 180 million in 1980 to 422 million in 2014. The major factors leading to this are transition related to lifestyle changes, stress, and food pattern. It is very important to create an awareness on diabetes among general population with collaboration of all relevant sectors/institutions and NGOs to fight against the diabetes to halt the rise and beat diabetes, as the theme of the year suggested. She also appreciated the efforts of MCON, Manipal for organizing various events as part of World Health day.

 

Dr Rohini, Udupi district health officer, in her introductory speech, highlighted the importance of World health day. She has emphasized on the fact that people need to take active role to beat diabetes and reduce complication like diabetic nephropathy and retinopathy.

 

Dr Anice George,dean, Manipal College of Nursing Manipal delivered presidential address.

 

She emphasized the role and importance of women empowerment at family level in preparing healthy diet and educating family members especially their children to adopt healthy eating habits and life style modification in preventing diabetes among younger generation. She also appreciated the support given by District Health officers and officials for collaborating with Manipal College of Nursing for various IEC activities.

 

Dr Shashidhara Y N, head of department of community health, Manipal College of Nursing, Manipal welcomed the gathering and Sandya Prabhu, lecturer, Manipal College of Nursing, Manipal proposed the vote of thanks. The event was compered by Dinu James, IV year B Sc nursing student, MCON Manipal, Manipal University.

 

Inaugural function continued with the seminar. The 1st session was delivered by Professor Dr M Mukhyaprana Prabhu, unit head, department of general medicine, KMC Manipal on Clinical management of patients with diabetes. He highlighted on the severity of diabetes in India, risk factors, various new and effective diagnostic methods and treatments that are available for treatment and prevention of complication and diabetes mellitus. He concluded that health education plays an important role in beating diabetes.

 

Next session was taken by Professor Dr G Arun Maiya, department of physiotherapy, SOAHS, Manipal University on Diabetic foot assessment and management. He spoke about foot facts and change in the foot architecture. Health professionals should identify the changes in foot architecture and provide appropriate care by providing specially designed foot wears.

 

Aldrin Vas, PhD scholar delivered session on Evidence based practice in care of patients with diabetes. He has explained the different types of evidences available for diabetic care and strategies for improving diabetic care.

 

Prabhath M Kalkura, project manager, World Diabetic Foundation, KH, Manipal spoke on the stigma associated with diabetes. He emphasized on the support and care which should be given in family, peers, friends and community for patients with diabetes. Also mentioned that diabetes patients should always observe keenly and regularly their foot for any changes and take treatment promptly.

 

Manjula, assistant professor, department of community health Nursing, MCON, Manipal University spoke on diabetic diet and role of nurse. She said that the dietary education to the general public needs to be very clear in terms of the do’s and don’ts. Also the dietary planning should be made based on the glycemic index and load.
