Udupi: Women’s Day celebrated with Pledge for Parity at Manipal College of Nursing

Udupi, 10 March 2016: Women across the globe have significantly contributed to social, economic, cultural and political achievement. The International Women’s day 2016 Campaign theme ‘Pledge for parity’ has emphasized to close the gap between gender disparities. This day is called for to take a pledge to help women and girls achieve their ambitions, call for gender-balanced leadership, respect and value difference, develop more inclusive and flexible cultures or root out workplace bias.
Keeping this in view, the faculty and postgraduate students of department of obstetrics and gynecological nursing, Manipal College of Nursing (MCON), Manipal, Manipal University, Manipal and G Shankar Government Women’s First Grade College and post-graduation study Centre and Committee for Prevention of Atrocity against Women, Ajjarkad, Udupi observed International Women’s Day -2016 at Lion’s Bhavan, Brahmagiri on March 8 on the theme, Pledge for parity.
Around 120 women students and faculty attended the program. A similar programme was organized by department of community health nursing at Government First Grade College, Hiriadka, near here on the same day.
Yashodha, co-ordinator of Committee for prevention of Atrocity against women gave away the welcome speech and the inaugurated by all the dignitaries.
Drawing, poster and debate competitions were held as a part of this program and prizes were awarded for all the winners.
Dr Praveena J Pai, the chief guest of the day said, ‘Adolescence reproductive health was expanded to capture the essence of this growing phase. She also explained on pubertal changes, menstrual problems, unplanned pregnancy and contraception. She gave an overview on sexually transmitted infections, signs and prevention and also emphasized on Adolescence Nutrition which she said was an investment for future health. The very important message ‘Adolescence, though it is an excitement phase it should be enjoyed responsibly’ was given to all.
The second session was held by Hilda D’Silva, who spoke about ‘Planet 50-50 by 2030’. Illustrating through examples, she explained how women were successful and how lucky women were even with globalization. At the same time, she also pointed out certain problems which women are facing in society, like women getting molested, the falling sex ratios, school dropouts, child prostitution, unwanted dowry related death, and especially atrocity towards women.
Professor B Jagadhisha Rao, principal, G Shankar Government Women’s First Grade College and Post Graduate study Centre, Ajjarkad, here in his Presidential address said, ‘The importance of women should be ingrained in our value system. He urged the student to look within themselves and draw inspiration.’
The programme was winded up with vote of thanks by Pratibha, assistant professor of MCON. Manipal.
The event at Government First Grade College was inaugurated by Sojan K G, principal. Manjula, assistant professor of community health nursing, MCONl was the resource person.
The chief guest Sojan appreciated women’s patience to face the difficulties and power to solve the problems of the family.
Following the chief guest’s address B Sc nursing students demonstrated the status of women in the past and present scenario through mime show.
Manjula, assistant professor, community health nursing, MCON spoke on menstrual hygiene, which includes physiological changes during adolescence, personal hygiene, use and disposal of sanitary pads and diet during the adolescence and also clarified the queries of the students on menstrual problems.
The Quiz was conducted for the degree college girls. Best two groups were given prizes and one consolation prize was given for the quiz competition. The event concluded with vote of thanks by Malathi G Nayak, assistant professor and the programme coordinator, department of community health nursing, MCON Manipal.
