Mangaluru: Treat migrants with dignity - Hemacharya

Mangaluru, 10 March 2016: St Aloysius College, the department of economics, here in collaboration with Indian Social Institute, Bengaluru organized a one-day National Workshop on Right to Work; New Dimensions of Distress Migration in South India on Wednesday March 9.
The chief guest and inaugurator of the Workshop Hemacharya, editor-in-chief of Daijiworld Weekly gave a bird’s eye view of distress migration. He spoke about the 3Ms - Mangaloreans, Malayalis and Madarasi to be the highest number in migration. He said that migrants are adventurous. He also said, ‘We should interact with the migrants and treat them with dignity. It is because they are used for the work in the place of destination and it is our moral duty to give them respect and a dignified life.’
SAC principal Fr Swebert D’Silva SJ presided the function.
Fr Martin Puthusherry SJ from the Indian Social Institute made a wonderful presentation in which he clearly dealt with the problems of marginalized section of the society going for distress migration and the challenges ahead. Dr Vinoj Abraham, Associate Professor at Centre for Development Studies dealt with the labour market for distress migrants, its emergence and its features. He highlighted the fact that large scale of migrant population from the northern states migrate to south India especially in search of employment in menial jobs.
Dr Shaukath Azim, Professor of the department of sociology, Karnataka University, Dharwad said that it is the juggernaut, the force which is responsible for migration. He also highlighted on the stages of migration and the changes in demographic profile especially in rural areas. Dr Sajikumar S, Fellow, New India Foundation, New Delhi focused on the insecurities and vulnerabilities of interstate migrant workers.
Around 172 delegates participated in the Workshop. Paper presentation by teachers and students was an added attraction of the Workshop.
