Puttur: Space Science initiated progress of Nation - Prof Gangadhara Bhat

Puttur, 05 March 2016: ‘The tremendous development took place in Space Science and Technology in the post Independency era has initiated progress of India. Thanks to visionary scientists like Raman, Bhabha, Sarabhai and Abdul Kalam. They had vision for the overall growth of the nation,’ said Dr Gangadhara Bhat, Professor of Marine Geology, Mangalore University during his guest lecture on ‘Make in India the dream to realize’ as a part of National Science Day celebration held at St Philomena College here.

 

It was jointly organized by the Science Forum, Karnataka Rajya Vijnana Parishath (KRVP) district unit and the Alumni Association of the College.

 

 

‘Using the remote sensing satellites one could gather invaluable data of large area of the earth which is not possible from other means. The environmental impact of the developments such as sea erosion, climate change, and forest destruction in a region can be evaluated. The water, mineral, forestry and biodiversity information could be gathered by satellite based studies. India has reached the stage of self sufficiency in Space Science. India could launch satellites to lower, middle and higher altitudes from the space station in the country itself which is actually the make in India. The growth of industry, agriculture, education, commerce and many other sectors are due to satellites which have been becoming the integral part of daily life,’ said Dr Gangadhara Bhat.

 

Fr Dr Antony Prakash Monteiro, campus director and chairman for PG studies said, ‘By celebrating the Science Day, we actually honor the contributions of Nobel laureate Professor C V Raman and other scientists and their work. Professor Raman did his research with minimum facility available at that time. With shear perseverance and dedication, he could discover the finest phenomenon of light scattering. The younger generation should derive the inspiration from the life of great people of Science and work for the growth of this great nation,’ said Fr Dr Monteiro.

 

Kadamajalu Subhas Rai, the president of KRVP, district unit, in his introductory remarks said, “Agriculture is also a lucrative job like any other jobs. Younger generation should enter into this field not shun away. By introducing the modern technology added with the scientific spirit, we can make the agriculture as economically viable.’

 

Fr Alfred J Pinto, the correspondent of the College presided the function and said, ‘The scientific temper is essential for the peace and harmony. The questions which we ask and efforts we make to gain answer for those questions are actually make the Science. Inquest minds only crate Science and nurture the Science. We have gone to the space and moon; we could gage the universe, but remember our feet should be on Earth. We have to preserve the serene nature of which we are all part. Any growth should not be the expense of the destruction of mother earth.’

 

Professor Leo Noronha, the principal, Professor Udaya, convener of Science Forum, Bharath, secretary of Alumni Association, Karunakara Shetty, secretary of KRVP district unit, faculty members and science students were present.

 

Sinchana and group rendered prayer Jayakumar Rai, president of the Alumni Association welcomed the gathering. Reshma Thomas proposed vote of thanks. Ananya compered the function.
