Squash gold medalist puts up his kidney for auction on social media
Bijnor, 12 Jan 2016: Ravi Dixit, who won gold medal at the 2010 Asian Junior Championship squash games has put up his kidney for sale (on social media) for an amount of Rs 8 lakh to fund his forthcoming campaign at the South Asian Games.
Though India is not bereft of talented people, who make the country proud at various platforms, it is however common for some to take extreme steps of even committing suicide due to lack of facilities or financial issues to pursue their talent.
20-year-old Dixit, who has been playing squash for the last 10 years and has represented India many times, including winning medals too, is currently training for the upcoming South Asian games in Chennai. Though he is being supported by Dhampur Sugar Mill for quite some, he has not been able to raise the required amount for the training—and hence a disappointed Ravi has put up his kidney for sale.
The message he posted on his Facebook page reads, “Dhampur Sugar Mill has supported me but how long will they continue to support me? Next month, the games are starting in Guwahati and I am representing India. To prepare for the tournament, I am training in Chennai but I have not been able to arrange enough money to fund my campaign for the games. I have lost my determination. I am ready to sell my kidney. If anyone needs a kidney, they can contact me. The price of my kidney is Rs 8 lakh."
His parents are in a shock too at their son’s decision as they fear such a step may ruin his life and career.
Ravi’s father is a class-IV employee at the Dhampur Sugar Mill and they express their gratitude to the mill for having supported so far however they find it too embarrassing to ask them for more help.
However, there is a glimmer of hope for Ravi as a few politicians have offered to extend their support. Moolchand Chauhan, UP state minister, said, “Ravi is a very talented player. I am shocked to hear that he has offered to auction his kidney. I will meet his family soon and take the matter to chief minister Akhilesh Yadav. We will help him in any way that we can."
