Puttur: Workshop on Consumer Awareness held at St Philomena College

Puttur, 18 Dec 2015: ‘The Consumer Protection Act, 1986 was enacted to provide quicker access to redressal of consumer grievances. No court fee is required to be paid to the Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum and there is no need to engage a lawyer to present the case,’ said Asha Shetty, president of DK district Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum.
After inaugurating one day workshop on Consumer Awareness for the members of selected Stree Shakti Groups of DK district, organized jointly by department of food, civil supplies and consumer affairs of DK district, district Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum, department of legal meteorology, district Federation of Consumer Organizations, department of women and child development and Suraksha Consumer Forum of St Philomena College, here at their silver jubilee memorial hall, on Thursday December 17, Asha Shetty said, ‘It is the duty of every organization to satisfy consumers by providing quality goods and services at right place, time and in right quantity at a fair price.’
A B Ibrahim, Deputy Commissioner of DK District presided the function and said, ‘Consumer exploitation can only be brought down if consumers as whole stay united and develop the habit of questioning the malpractices used by the sellers.’
DK zilla panchayat CEO P I Srividya, DK district Federation of Consumer Organizations’ president M J Salian and St Philomena College campus director Fr Dr Antony Prakash Monteiro, participated as chief guests.
In technical sessions, Timmarayappa, assistant controller of legal meteorology gave demonstrations on ‘False Weights and Measurements’, Dr Nityananda Pai of Puttur delivered a talk on ‘Misleading Medical Advertisements’ and Raghavendra Rao, advocate from Suratkal spoke on ‘Awareness of Women Consumers.’
Sahana Rao and group presented the prayer. Dr Dase Gowda, deputy director, department of food, civil supplies and consumer affairs welcomed the gathering. Vishnu P Nayak, secretary, DK district Federation of Consumer Organizations’ proposed the vote of thanks. Professor Dinakara Rao, convener, Suraksha Consumer Forum compered the programme.
