Kasargod: Police lay hands on ’hi-tech’ ATM thief
Kasargod, 23 Aug 2015: The hi-tech ATM theft cases reported in the region, which had left the police jittery has finally ended with the arrest of an ATM service engineer.
The arrested is C G Vinod (25), hailing from Ernakulam.
The police reached the ATM Service Engineer after probing into theft of Rs 85,000 from Canara Bank ATM at Badiyadka in May 2015.
During the interrogation, it is revealed that Vinod had swindled money from various ATMs across the state and some even outside the state.
Vinod used to be called in by Bank Managers if their ATM machines were spoilt. To repair the ATM Machine, the Bank Managers would give him the security passwords that Vinod used to remember. After the repair works are over, Vinod would return to the ATM kiosk and open the machine using the password and do away with the money.
However, Badiyadka ATM theft case turned out to be a wrong move for Vinod as the cops plunged in full swing to crack the case. On May 15, he had opened the ATM machine and stolen Rs 85,000 swiftly without leaving any evidences behind. The police did all possible efforts to crack the case, but nothing yielded results. Unfortunately, even CCTV camera was switched off when the theft took place.
After detailed planning, the police zeroed in on experts that were associated with the ATM repair and thus shortlisted Vinod.
They then called Vinod to Kasargod ATM on pretext of repairing the Machine and nabbed him. On interrogating,. Vinod revealed the startling fact that he had stolen money from 25 such ATMs across the state.
The investigations are on and the police is hoping to unravel many more details from hi-tech thief.
