Mangaluru: India’s growth, net positive & model for other countries - Dr Stephen Tankel

Mangaluru, 21 Aug 2015: The department of Political Science of St Aloysius College (Autonomous), here, organized a seminar on ‘Regional look at security in South and Central Asia’ by guest lecturer Dr Stephen Tankel, Assistant Professor in the School of International Service at American University. Ariel Pollock, public affairs officer of US Consulate, Chennai was also present for the occasion.

 

Dr Stephen Tankel spoke about counter-terrorism, counter narcotics and USA’s policies towards it with respect to its relations with the countries of South and Central Asia. In his lecture, he mentioned the various aspects of various terrorism groups and how these groups are not strategic players but can be used to have strategic effect in terms of hampering connectivity among different countries.

He stated that India is perceived by the USA as a net security provider in Central Asia. It is increasingly encouraged to continue the growing engagement it has with its neighboring countries. He further mentioned that there is a difference between looking strong and being strong and that India’s settling of disputes peacefully is an example of being strong.

 

This lecture was followed by a robust interactive session wherein the media, the students as well as the staff indulged in an informative question-answer session with the guest lecturer himself.

 

Ariel Pollock briefly summarized the forum. She stated that the US consulate looks forward to such discussions as a strategic plus partnership where they look to build people to people ties between India and the USA.

 

Fr Swebert D’Silva SJ, principal of St Aloysius College emphasized that every student of the college should be globally competent.

 

Dr Rose Veera D’Souza, HOD of Political Science welcomed the gathering. The faculty of political science department Alwyn D’Souza proposed vote of thanks.

 

Over a 100 students actively participated in this event.
