Mangaluru: Legal fraternity joins in creating awareness on Anti-ragging

Mangaluru, 30 Jul 2015: The district legal services Authority, Mangaluru Bar Association in association with Vikas PU College, here organized an awareness programme on anti-ragging law, at the College premises, here on Thursday July 30.
Before the beginning the programme, floral tribute was paid to our former President Dr A P J Abdul Kalam, followed by 2 minutes of silent prayer.
The programme was inaugurated by Bailur Shankar Rama, principal judge of family court, here.
Ganesha B, senior civil judge and member secretary of DK district legal services Authority was the chief guest of the occasion.
Thilakchandra, ACP, Mangaluru city and Krishna J Palemar, chairman of Vikas Education Trust were the guests of honor.
Ragging is an act of teasing or harassing the new hapless students by seniors in colleges to get sadistic pleasure. Fear, depression, psychosis and developing suicidal tendencies are the far reaching consequences of ragging. Indulging in ragging may ruin the career of a student and also the family of that student. Instead, the senior students should share their experience with juniors laced in true love and affection, the way former President Dr A P J Kalam expected from everyone, said Bailur Shankar Rama.
He also advised college managements to take undertaking from students, so that they could be debarred if indulged in ragging.
The relations are getting degenerated nowadays due to the disappearance of joint families. Love, ethical code of conduct is loosing meaning in the fast-changing society. Ragging is a menace exclusively designed to get temporary enjoyment by torturing others. The hazardous consequences of ragging are multidimensional. It is a violation of human rights also and criminal offence under sections of Indian Penal Code (IPC), said the resource person A Udayanand, senior advocate of Mangalore Bar Association.
Udayanand threw light on the various types and forms of Ragging that may be inflicted on students. He also emphasized the importance of students to stand up and speak up, if they are a victim of ragging. He ensured that all the authorities will assure them of help in any case. He pointed out that those who rag others are themselves mentally weak and will target younger students to take out their frustration. He additionally quoted many sections of the IPC, thus enlightening students about their rights and laws.
As a representative of police department, to eradicate ragging from educational institutions, ACP Thilakchandra advised the students not to spoil their future for momentary enjoyment.
We should perform our duties irrespective of one’s status. Students need to excel in academics. This type of awareness programme is not to practice but to take precautions, said judge Ganesha B.
Shalini, a student at Vikas College, said, ‘We never knew we had so many rights and that there were laws which protect us; I feel much safer thanks to Vikas PU College for organizing this programme.’
Ananth Prabhu, advisor of Vikas College said, ‘I sincerely thank the members of District Legal Services Authority, Mangaluru Bar association and Mangaluru Police for taking their time and coming to ensure students that they are not alone. Ragging is major nuisance which should be curbed at any cost and after today’s good message it will definitely contribute to the student’s minds and thought process against ragging.’
