Bantwal, 24 Jul 2015: It’s not proper to generalize the farmers’ suicides who might have been victim of some other tragedy. The responsibility lies in media also to restrain farmers from committing suicide, said Mysore University journalism Professor Dr Niranjan Vanalli.

DR Niranjan was speaking during valedictory function of Media Convention – 2015 that was organized in association with Bantwal taluk working journalists Association at Gurudev Jnana Mandir, Odiyoor mutt, near here on Wednesday July 22.

How can you expect media to be on right track when the entire society is at the crossroads, questioned Dr Niranjan. Among the journalists, in majority of cases the least competent gets job security, while the competent does not have that security, added Dr Niranjan.

If the society is fine, mirror will reflect the same. However, if its not, the mirror will not lie. The journalist should first try to save the lives, instead of taking pictures of self immolation victim on the act and reporting live from the spot, said Dr Niranjan.

Swami Gurudevanand of Odiyoor mutt in his message urged the journalists to be committed to their professional ethics that would sustain both journalist and society. The media plays vital role in creating healthy society.

Sadwi Matanandamayi of Odiyoor mutt was also present.

Media Convention Committee convener Udayashankar Nirpaje urged the state administration to provide job security to media persons who are working under pressure. They should be given state facilities such as season tickets in KSRTC buses, life insurance and emergency medicare.

AIR – Mangaluru station director Dr Vasant Kumar Perla in his presidential address said that media has the commitment to reform the society in achieving societal progress. The media educates the readers. It would be significant if the media promotes farming that is losing sheen in coastal district, said Dr Vasant.

The senior journalists N Gururaj Manipal, Mulky Vasant Nayak Palimarkar, Puttur Professor V B Artikaje, Bantwal taluk Kannada Sahitya Parishat president Jayanand Peraje and media representative Umesh Rao Yekkar were felicitated on the same occasion.
