Mangaluru: Dolphin washed ashore at Hosabettu
Mangaluru, 17 Jun 2015: A four-feet-long dolphin with multiple injuries washed ashore on Wednesday, June 17 at Hosabettu here.
Local fishermen said the cuts on the body could have been caused by the blades of ships as the dolphins tend to follow ships they sight in the sea.
As soon as the news spread, the locals flocked to the sea shore to capture the dolphin.
The locals stated that dolphins were spotted at Panambur beach many a time.
“The dolphins usually come close to shore in search of food, and can even be seen from the shore. They can often be seen playing among themselves in groups of more than 10 near the breakwater constructed by the New Mangalore Port,” they added.
CEO of Panambur Beach Development Tourism Project Yathish Baikampady stated that owing to the rough sea, the locals could not leave the dolphin into the deep sea. He further said that as it is badly hurt, chances of it’s survival are dim.
He also stated that two kinds of dolphins frequented the Arabian Sea, the short-beaked common dolphin (Delphinus Capensis) which had a white underside, and the spinner dolphin (Stenella Longirostris) which is grey.
