Mangaluru: Care beyond Cure; Yenepoya University appoints German expert

Mangaluru, 30 May 2015: Palliative Care will assist patients in their last days of life. Patients and relatives can get all support needed by skilled staff. Yenepoya Nursing College is in the way to improve the caretakers’ skills.

 

Yenepoya Nursing College was promoted as National teaching center for Palliative Care under its principal Professor Dr Asha P Shetty in 2014. Being the co-ordinator for future Palliative Care Course, she underwent a 20-days specialized teachers training: ‘It not only enriched my knowledge. I became more passionate and understanding for the needs of patients in the end of their lives.’

 

 

Soon a similar 20 days course was planned at Deralakatte. It started in Feb 2015 with 8 nurses and 8 nursing college teaching faculty. The German palliative care expert Dr J Becker-Ebel was appointed as additional visiting faculty. It is the first ever 20-day diploma course of international reputation in India according to the European standards.

 

Dr Becker-Ebel comes from Germany but lived in rural Tamil Nadu for 6 years in the 1990s. He was invited by Indian central government to spread the news of palliative are among governmental and private universities for the sake of all patients. He got the support of his own government and of the Indian experts, with whom he wrote the UG-Curriculum for nurses and medical practitioners in 2013 at Trivandrum. Yenepoya University signed with him and his company MediAcion a MoU during 2014 and later he was appointed as adjunct faculty in the position of a professor for palliative care nursing and palliative care teaching at Yenepoya University.

 

On Thursday May 28, NSS Unit of Yenepoya Nursing College and the Vice Chancellor of the University invited him to plant a Rohitaka tree at the university premises on the occasion of his vocation to professorship. All the 16 students of the first palliative care nursing batch attended. The next palliative care basic course at Nursing college will start in Dec 2015. Admission is open now.
