Bantwal, 28 May 2015: Despite the illegal sand mining in the limits of Pudu village council claimed 2 innocent lives a few days ago, the Dakshina Kannada district administration has not taken any action on mining activities. The locals staged a flash strike at the spot of sand mining on Tuesday May 26, against the unabated activities in spite of 3 teenage boys of same family perished in the river by drowning in pits dug up by the earthmovers of sand mining.
Mohammed Suhail and Mohammed Sahil, both children of Isaac, residing at Sujir, near here were drowned in the river, by accidentally tipping on the deep pit about a week ago. The locals pleaded the mining department officials not to allow sand mining as their children had to walk besides the river to go to school. However, the officials did not turn up at the site to curb the illegal sand mining.
The labourers engaged in illegal sand mining resumed their work within a few days of 2 boys drowned in the river. When the locals arrived at the spot, the labourers abandoned the loading into the tipper-trucks along with shovels and baskets.
The locals are aggrieved as neither Deputy Commissioner nor the mining department officials/sand mining contractor did not visit the grieving family of 2 boys drowned in the river.
