Mangaluru, 05 Mar 2015: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Dakshina Kannada district unit held a sit-in at Nantoor roundabout, a intersection of 3 national highways here on Wednesday March 4 from 5.00pm to 8.00pm, in order to highlight lack of safety caused by unscientific roundabout resulted in several road mishaps including the ghastly accidents a few days ago, wherein 2 persons died and others sustained injuries when a dumper truck driver faced brake failure.
With traffic snarls and the repeated fatal accidents at the Nanthoor Junction - where national highways cris-cross along with a road from the city - AAP understands that the permanent and best solution will be a flyover/underpass along with general measures.
AAP demands the speedy implementation of the sanctioned underpass at this intersection within minimum time. Till that time, AAP demand short term measures to save lives at this dangerous area, to reduce the circumference of the circle so that vehicles can maneuver easily, to reduce the size of triangular dividers near the circle to increase the width of the road, to relocate the bus stop near the Nanthoor circle to a nearby location ensuring decongestion at the Nantoor roundabout, to allow left turn on road leading to Kulshekar from KPT, also left turn for vehicles from Kulshekar to Mahaveer roundabout at Pumpwell, to install traffic signal lights at the intersection, to assign full time traffic police officers including at least one officer above the rank of ASI, to provide adequate lighting of this spot for safe travel at night, to install CCTV cameras and monitoring the traffic, to remove all distracting commercial ads, to erect signboard.
‘The protest will be intensified if the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) further delays to take early action,’ cautioned AAP district team leader Alexander D’Souza.
