Mangaluru: Scores of students participate in Nitte Marathon

Mangaluru, 23 Feb 2015: For many it was a fun-filled enthusiasm to run with many irrespective of the age and for others it was a first time experience, as the Nitte Mangaluru half marathon and 10 km run organized by Dakshina Kannada Athletic Association (DKAA) was a grand success.
The event, sponsored by Nitte Education Trust, was flagged-off at Mangala Stadium, here on Sunday February 22 at 6.00am.
Athlete and brand ambassador of Nitte Marathon Ashwini Nachappa, KPCC president Dr Parameshwar, state health minister U T Khadar, sports minister Abhaychandra Jain, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, and DK district in-charge minister Ramanath Rai inaugurated the various categories of the event.
The mayor Mahabala Maarla, Nitte Education Trust chairman Vinaya Hegde and others were present.
One of the participants of 5 km Fun Run who participated for the first time said, ‘After a long time I ran 5 kms but it was exciting to run with so many people for the first time, it was exciting. I would love to participate even in the next year,’ said a participant from St Agnes College.
The half marathon had nearly 20,000 participants of all ages, men and women and boys and girls. The route passed through Lady Hill, Mannagudda, Car Street, Navabharat Circle, PVS, M G Road and back to Mangala stadium.
The event comprised both competitive and non-competitive categories. The half marathon had 2 categories namely open category (16-45 years) and senior category (46-60 years). The 10 km run consisted of 3 categories - open category (16-45 years), senior category (46-60 years), and veteran category (61 years and above).
As a special incentive, 6 special cash prizes were awarded to top six winners in the open category (16-45 years) of half marathon and 10 km run. Top three winners in senior category (46-60) of half marathon and 10 km run as well as top three winners in veteran category of 10 km run also received prizes.
