Mangaluru: Minister Rai inaugurates Horticulture & Floriculture exhibition at Kadri Park

Mangaluru, 15 Feb 2015: The state forests and Dakshina Kannada district-in-charge minister Ramanath Rai inaugurated the exhibition of flowers and various products of horticulture department at Kadri Park here on Saturday February 14 afternoon.
 
Addressing the media persons, minister Rai appreciated the organizers. He said, ‘Even though I have been inaugurating this exhibition since many years, compared to the previous years, the organizers this year indeed have put up a nice show,’ said minister Rai.
 
Speaking on the changes in the agriculture sphere now, minister Rai said, ‘Today since there is no much land for farming in nuclear families, terrace garden and growing a few varieties of vegetable at the backyard has become popular. Flowers and vegetables grown in these gardens have become a source of income which used to be a hobby. The horticulture department supports the terrace garden through subsidy,’ added minister Rai.

Flower model of Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) which was made exclusively for the exhibition attracted the attention of visitors as well as guests. The unique model has been made out of over 12,000 Dutch roses, carnations, lilies and other flowers.
 
Besides, there are variety of flowers such as marigold, cosmos, celosia, pentas and canna. In addition to it, the department has also grown bottle gourd, bitter gourd, radish, spinach, pumpkin including other vegetables for the show along with stall of seeds, chemical fertilizers, handcrafts items, agricultural machinery.
 
The exhibition has a nominal entry fee of Rs 10 for adults and Rs 5 for children and is open till February 17.
 
The mayor Mahabala Marla, horticulture department deputy director Yogesh H R an d others were present on the occasion.
