Mangaluru: MP Nalin urges palm planters not to opt for alternative crops

Mangaluru, 27 Jan 2015: MP Nalin Kumar urged the farmers not to neglect palm plantation that is as significant as paddy cultivation, because there is no alternative for palm plantation that has multiple uses, urged MP Nalin.
MP Nalin was the chief guest during the workshop on palm plantation that was organized in collaboration with palm development Board and horticulture department by palm planters union, at Oddoor Farm, Ganjimut, here on Tuesday January 27.
SEZ can help the farmers by forming special agriculture zone by facilitating testing of soil water and environment that would better suit specific crop, said MP Nalin. The palm has multiple uses, while in the neighboring state of Kerala the coir has been used to lay roads. The palm products, such as toddy, shells etc have great demand that would be beneficial for palm planters to earn substantial profits. The officers of horticulture department and palm development Board had to make honest attempt in reaching the benefits of both union and state government meant for palm planters, added MP Nalin.
The plantation assistant director Sanjeev Poojary appealed to the palm planters to form their union in every village to produce palm products that would of world class quality and exported.
The progressive farmer Rajashekar Nayak presided the programme.
The palm planters of all taluks of DK district attended the programme.
