Udupi 23 Dec 2014: Two young mentally ill sisters venture out from their confinement after about 10 years, on Tuesday, December 23 at Bannanje here.

For these two sisters named Shashirekha and Neena, aged between 25 to 30 years the four walls of their house was their world because their mother Sulochana would keep them under house arrest for reasons unknown.

It is said that ten-years-ago Sulochana lost her husband Seetharam and the situation turned tragic for the girls. They were kept confined to the house by their own mother who prevented them from going to school and venturing out.

The neighbours who would frequently see Sulochana, were out for a shock to know that two more individuals were living in the same house. As per the neighbours, even Sulochana’s mental condition is not sound as she was often seen in a distraught state.

On Tuesday, December 23, when the officials of Women and Child Welfare Department and other departments visited the house of Sulochana, she refused to open the door.

After about one-and-a-half hours, a relative of Sulochana arrived and managed to convince her to open the door. The officials then took the sisters and their mother to the hospital by 108 ambulance for checkup.

According to the officials, Sulochana, Shashirekha and Neena will be forwarded for medical examination first. Counseling will be done and if required the women will be forwarded for rehabilitation.
