Huge amount of explosives seized; two Kannadigas arrested
Kasargod, 09 Dec 2014: Amid political turmoil in Kannur, Taliparamba and surrounding areas, the Excise Department on Tuesday, December 9 seized huge amount of explosives that were being transported to Kerala in a pick-up vehicle.
Vehicle driver Rajesh (26) and another person named Vishakantha (28), residents of Hunsoor, Karnataka have been arrested. As the officials checked the vehicle that was plying towards Kannur via Kiliyantara Inspection Centre, they found explosives beneath the onion filled gunny bags.
Two bags of Ammonium Nitrate, each weighing 50 kgs, 600 boxes of Nitrate Mixer and 1,500 detonators have been seized. The duo were then handed over to the police.
When quizzed, the arrested are said to have revealed that that they were only asked to transport the containers to a place called Iritti and that they were clueless about its usage.
In the wake of few political outfits trying to disrupt peace and harmony in the state, police have suspected that the explosives were being transported in this regard.
