Moodubelle: Annual Sports Day of St. Lawrence English Medium School held

Moodubelle, 10 November 2010: The Annual sports day for the academic year 2010-11 of St. Lawrence English Medium School, Moodubelle was held on the bright and sunny day on Tuesday, 9 November 2010 at 9.15 am in St. Lawrence PU College ground. The inaugural function was presided over by Fr. Paul Sequeira-principal of St. Lawrence Composite PU College. Commodore Jerome Castelino was the chief guest and Mrs. Janet Menezes, representative of the Parents Teachers Association and Henry Fernandes-vice president of the Parish Pastoral Council were the guests of honour.

 

The guests were led to the play ground by the school band playing the marching tune. After the guests occupied their chairs on the dais, Mrs. Flavia Barboza anchored the inaugural programme. Fr. Lancy Saldanha, principal of St. Lawrence English Medium School welcomed the guests with flowers. Commodore Jerome Castelino received the honour of the students during the march past. Fr. Paul Sequeira hoisted the school flag. The meritorious sports-boys and girls of the school led by Reshal Fernandes ceremonially brought the baton to the sports ground which was taken around the ground by the sports persons. Finally, Preetham Nayak, the sports secretary of the school handed over the baton to Mrs. Janet Menezes who in turn lighted the sports flame with the baton. Thereafter, Preetham Nayak recited the oath on behalf of all the sports persons.

 

The sports boys and girls who had performed well at the Zonal, Taluka and District level were given their medals and certificates by Commodore Jerome Castelino. The meritorious sportspersons included: Bradley Saldanha of 7th standard who had won silver medal in hurdles and bronze medal in high jump at the zonal level sports meet; Preetham Nayak who had won bronze medal in 400 meters race and discuss throw in the Taluka level sports meet; Rovita D’Souza of 9th standard who had won silver medal in the Taluka level sports meet.

 

Reshal Fernandes of 7th standard who had won silver medal in high jump at the zonal and Taluka level and silver medal at the District level and has been selected to represent the District at the State level sports meet to be held at Davanagere on 18 November 2010 was honoured by Fr. Paul Sequeira by presenting her shawl, flowers and medals.

 

 

In his message to the students, Commodore Jerome Castelino greatly appreciated the smart march past of the students and very good formation and steps. He had a special praise for the school band which played very well. He made an appeal to the students to participate in the sports whole heartedly and put in sincere efforts and show determination. With some of examples, he pointed out that even with disabilities there had been some athletes who through their efforts and determination as well as support and encouragement of their families and friends could win medals in the Olympics.

 

Fr. Paul Sequeira in his presidential address wished the sports persons well and said that education and sports are the two sides of the same coin. He asked the students to treat the ground as the classroom for the day and show their abilities as sports boys and sports girls.

 

The sports were conducted by the physical training teacher – Bharat Shetty and Sashidhar A. along with the teachers under the direction of Fr. Lancy Saldanha. The sports meet continued till 4.30 pm.

 

Following the participation of the sports boys and girls in various sports events the following students were declared as the champions at the annual sports meet:

1. 9th and 10th standards: Boys: Sharron Raj; Girls: Ranjita G.R., Rovita D’Souza and Spoorthy Nayak
2. 7th and 8th standards: Boys:Einstein D’Souza; Girls: Larissa Fernandes
3. 5th and 6th standards: Aditya; Girls: Flency and Viola Mathias

Among the Houses: Yellow House scored highest points and scored the first position and Red House scored second position.

 

Fr. Lancy Saldanha gave away prizes to the champions.
