Mangalore, 17 Oct 2014: His energy levels mock the present youth. His love for life makes one fall in love with his own life. The systematic routine has made him a centurion but the celebration organized by his friends and well-wishers’ went pale after the centurion fell ill due to the tiring activities he had to induce in his life style in the past week.
The centurion youth of Mangalore C R Michal D’Souza fell sick around 4.00pm, thus making him impossible to attend the felicitation and 100th birthday celebration organized at 5.00pm at Canara College auditorium here on Thursday October 16.
On behalf of the centurion his grand daughter and his niece cut the cake.
If he had listened to the doctor who treated him, could have come to the program by taking an injection that was offered for the temporary relief from the fever. But his view was ’I have not taken any injection or medicine till now and neither will I take it in the future. By this, he stands up as a person who is ready to sacrifice the publicity for the stand he always stood for and thus making himself the epitome of self respect.
A close friend of Michael and the convener of the centenary celebrations, rationalist Professor Narendra Nayak in his keynote address explained the reason for his absence in this way.
‘Since a week he was made to drive the car every now and then which is quite tiring to a person of his age. He was very happy to celebrate his 100the birthday as an enthusiastic cab driver. He had taken a round of the city in his car to celebrate his birthday in his own way in the morning. Later, he had also participated in the birthday celebration organized by his neighbours. Later he went to the bank and had parked his car around 2.00pm. At 4.00pm, he felt feverish and while the checkup was found to have the fever. The doctor who diagnosed him advised to take an injection as a temporary relief and participate in the celebration. But the strong man refused the injection stating he had never taken one in his life time and hence had to rest back in his house,’ said Professor Narendra.
It was really astonishing to see the venue of the celebration filled with his well-wishers’ and friends without an invitation to witness the celebration of 100th birthday of one of the most oldest youth of the city yet a cheerful one.
Being honest, he can be called as the only cab driver in the country who earns his livelihood driving his car.
C R Michael D’ Souza lives on Microwave Station Road, Hat Hill, and leads a solitary life maintaining his own garden, dog, and ducks.
