Pregnant woman survives murder bid; swims 4km in river, stays afloat 12 hours

Mangalore, 10 Sep 2014: Though betrayed by her lover, a pregnant woman held on to her dear life for 12 hours in the swollen Kumaradhara River and swam four kms to save her life. And the person, who tried to murder his pregnant lover by pushing her into the Kumaradhara River on Monday, has been arrested by the by Nelyady police on Wednesday.
The accused Anand had pushed Leela (name changed), 19, who was six months pregnant into the river near Pulikukku, Kadaba. The victim, who knew swimming undeterred by the betrayal had somehow managed to swim through the swollen river for four kms. The incident had happened at 7.30pm on Monday and the girl was found in a pitiable state in the middle of the river by locals at Pijakkala Paloli and they rescued her after almost 12 hours.
Anand had got into physical relationship with Leela, resident of Rekhya village, convincing her that he would marry her. When he learnt that she was pregnant, he tried to get it aborted through a doctor in Uppinangady. But the doctor refused saying that it was at an advanced stage. So Anand hatched the plan to eliminate her.
On that day, he called Leela, who was at her aunt’s house at Alake and said her father was looking for her and he would come to pick her. He borrowed a two wheeler from his friend and took her to Subrahmanya temple and while returning back, he faked that the brakes of the vehicle had failed. While he was pretending to repair the vehicle, Leela was standing near the bridge when Anand pushed her into the river.
