Mangalore, 10 Sep 2014: National Environment Care Federation®) staged a protest in front of the office of Deputy Commissioner here on Wednesday September 10, urging the state government to ban the night traffic around the vicinity of Bandipura and Nagarahole reserve forests, to contain timber mafia from looting valuable trees.
H Sasidar Shetty of Federation said that Western Ghats are being destroyed by vested interests of politicians. Several valuable trees are looted from Bandipur and Nagarahole reserve forest. Though the Supreme Court of India has banned night traffic in the region, it is not followed. Animal poaching has become a nightmare for wildlife. It has to be stopped, urged Sasidar.
The Federation urged the state government in the memorandum presented to Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner to implement Gadgill report and the proposed tiger project. The forest dwellers will have to be rehabilitated outside the forest and funds have to be released to protect the endangered plants and animals, urged Sasidar.
As part of the protest, children painted themselves in green and danced on the streets.
