M’lore: Gold haul at City airport; customs seize worth Rs 38 lac concealed in toys/tins

Mangalore, 10 Sep 2014: The officers of customs at Mangalore International Airport have busted another modus operandi of gold smuggling and seized gold totally weighing 1,393.200 grams in 2 separate cases valued at Rs 38,31,300. In the first case, the officers seized gold in the form of foil strips, totally weighing 709.600 grams and valued at Rs 19,51,400 concealed in cardboards containing toys and stickers affixed to them, around the walls of potato wafers tins, which were kept and brought in checked in bagged from the possession of a passenger, named thirty-nine-year-old Athiyalparambu Kunhabdulla, son of Adiran Athiyalparambu, residing at Zeenath Quarters, Kolavayal, Kolavayal Post, Kasargod district, Kerala, who arrived at MIA by Jet Airways flight No 9W531 from Dubai on Wednesday September 10 at about 7.45am.
In a similar modus operandi on the same day, the officers seized gold in the form of foil strips, totally weighing 693.600 grams and valued at Rs 18,79,900 concealed in cardboard boxes containing toys and stickers affixed to them, and around the walls of potato wafers tins, which were kept in the checked in baggage, from the possession of another passenger named Eachilingar Kunhamboo Moosa (32), son of Kunhamoo Eachilingal Kunnu r4esiding at Eachilingal House, Bare Post, Udma, Kasargod, Kerala who arrived at MIA by Jet Airways flight from Dubai at about 7.45am.
The operations were conducted under the supervision of Krishna Kumar Prasad, deputy commissioner of customs, MIA. Further investigation is under progress in the above said cases.
